Meanwhile, the UN has voiced alarm at the high number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the war. On Sunday, two more reporters lost their lives after their car was hit in an Israeli strike near Rafah. One of them was the son of Al Jazeera's Gaza bureau chief. The Doha-based channel is accusing Israel of carrying out a "targeted killing".
Shreyas Iyer was one of the big names missing from the Indian cricket team squad that was announced for the T20I series against Afghanistan starting Thursday. With just three T20I matches for the Indian cricket team before the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, these games were crucial for the cricketers to make their case for selection. However, reports claimed that the selectors were not pleased with Shreyas' batting in South Africa and he was not included by the team management due to disciplinary reasons.
The buildup to the India vs Afghanistan T20I series has been all about the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma into the T20I format. The star batters last played a T20I match at the 2022 T20 World Cup, where India lost in the semi-finals. Since then they have been limited to ODIs and Tests. However, for the last T20I series that India will play before the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Indian cricket team management recalled both. However, at the pre-match press conference, Rahul Dravid revealed that Virat Kohli will not be playing the first T20I against Afghanistan on Thursday.
Andrew Porter has spent all of his international career in the company of Andy Farrell and the Leinster prop has no doubt the current Ireland coach would be perfectly suited to leading the Lions.
With just over a week to go until the night of his life, South Africa's UFC superstar, Dricus du Plessis, is already being showered with messages of support ahead of his middleweight title fight against Sean Strickland.
Afghanistan allrounder Rashid Khan will miss the three-match T20 series against India as he needs more time to recover from a lower-back injury that required a surgery, captain Ibrahim Zadran said on Wednesday, on the eve of the opening match.
Yuzvendra Chahal is still one of the best wrist spinners in world cricket but will have to wait for his opportunity as Kuldeep Yadav is an improved white ball exponent now, reckoned former Proteas lead spinner Imran Tahir. Tahir felt left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep was able to grab the opportunities that came along his way. Chahal, one of the finest leg-break bowlers, is currently out of favour as he wasn't selected for last year's ODI World Cup in India and is unlikely to make it to the Indian squad for the T20 WC in the West Indies and the USA in June.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made a return to T20I cricket as the Indian cricket team squad for the three-match series against Afghanistan was announced but a clear omission was Shreyas Iyer. Iyer had a good run of form in the Cricket World Cup 2023 and even took part in the ODI and Test series against South Africa. As a result, his exclusion from the squad against Afghanistan came as a surprise for some fans as well as experts. According to a report on Anandabazar Patrika, the selectors were not happy with his style of batting in the recently concluded Test series. The report further claimed that Shreyas' decision to take a holiday and not play Ranji Trophy matches for Mumbai was not taken well by the team management.
