India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja announced his retirement from T20 international cricket on Sunday, a day after lifting the 20-over World Cup in Barbados.
The triumphant Indian team's celebrations at the Kensington Oval lasted close to four hours after a roller-coaster T20 World Cup final with players grooving to their favourite dance numbers and the usually reticent outgoing coach Rahul Dravid letting his hair down amid a general sense of relief for ending a lengthy title drought. The euphoria carried on in the team hotel but before that, at the historic venue, skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who both retired from the format, and Dravid let their emotions take control after a gruelling month-long campaign in the Caribbean and USA.
Following India's iconic victory at the Kensington Oval, secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jay Shah has announced that the prize money of Rs. 125 cr for the T20 World Cup 2024 “I am pleased to announce prize money of INR 125 Crores for Team India for winning the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. The team has showcased exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and support staff for this outstanding achievement,” read the tweet on X.
The celebrations are not ending anytime soon as Team India clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 title on Saturday (IST) and ended their 11-year-old ICC trophy drought. In the final clash against South Africa, India posted a total of 176/7 in 20 overs, after opting to bat first. Later in the chase, the Proteas put up a tough fight but fell short by seven runs as pacer Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya propelled Team India to victory. Apart from them, the most vital contribution was made by star batter Virat Kohli, who battled through his lean patch and played a heroic knock of 76 off 59 balls.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has paid heartfelt tribute to two stalwarts of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, on their T20Is retirement after the historic seven-run win over South Africa in the T20 World Cup final on Saturday. After the conclusion of the match, Kohli announced that it was his final T20I game and was later joined by captain Rohit, who also bid adieu to the format in the post-match press conference. "An Era Comes To An End in T20Is! The Aura Will Stay Forever! 2 Legends of the game. Thank you, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli," BCCI wrote on X.
