South Africa had pulled off a heist against India in the first T20I on Thursday as the Proteas chased down 212 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Both teams would now square off in the second T20I on Sunday and speaking at a press conference on Saturday, pacer Wayne Parnell opened up about the mood within the camp and how people had written South Africa off 10 overs into their chase in the first game.
After India went down to South Africa in the first T20I in New Delhi, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria criticised Rishabh Pant's captaincy. India put on a huge total of 211/4, but stunning knocks from Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller saw the visitors chase it down with five deliveries to spare. Kaneria slammed Pant's tactics and said he "rotated the bowlers poorly". He cited the use of Yuzvendra Chahal in the Powerplay and giving Hardik Pandya just one over as examples.
Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday, they had some positives on the batting front putting up a score of 211/4. Amongst them, Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik were making a comeback to the T20I side. While Karthik played just two balls, Pandya provided the finishing touches with his wristy stroke-play in making an unbeaten 31 off 12 balls, laced with two fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 258.33.
Bulls captain Marcell Coetzee achieved something that eluded him as an Ulsterman when the Bulls unexpectedly, but delightfully saw off Leinster 27-26 in their United Rugby Championship semi-final in Dublin on Friday.
Impressed by his performances during the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022), former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik should be in India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. Karthik scored 330 runs during IPL 2022 for RCB , striking at an impressive strike rate of 183.33. As a result, Karthik was recalled to the Indian side after almost three years for the ongoing five-match T20I series against South Africa. Ponting said that he'll be surprised if Karthik fails to find a place in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup later this year.
Rassie van der Dussen - while not stating so outright - has suggested that Dwanie Pretorius' promotion to No 3 in the Proteas' T20 batting order might not be a one-time event.
Captain Rishabh Pant will expect an improved showing from the India bowlers as he plots a comeback against a marauding South Africa in the second T20 of the five-match series at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on Sunday. Leading India for the first time ever, Pant had to swallow a bitter pill when David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen shot down an imposing 212 with utmost nonchalance to go up 1-0 in the series. The southpaw also had a forgettable Indian Premier League 2022 where he failed to lead Delhi Capitals to the playoffs.
