INGLEWOOD, California, June 28 : South Africa coach Hugo Broos said his side's 1-0 loss to Canada would be his final act at a World Cup, potentially bringing down the curtain on a career spanning more than five decades as both a player and manager.
LOS ANGELES, United States: Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage-time winner fired Canada to a 1-0 win over South Africa on Sunday in the first match of the World Cup knockout rounds, as the co-hosts advance to the last 16 for the first time in their history. With both sides making their first-ever appearance in the knockout phase, the game appeared to be heading for extra time, before Eustaquio broke South African hearts with a clinical hit from just outside the area. Canada — playing in Los Angeles despite being co-hosts, after failing to win their group — will now face the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston in the last 16 on July 4, as South Africa’s World Cup adventure comes to an end. Before the game, coach Jesse Marsch had talked up the “X-factor” of Canada’s star Alphonso Davies, available again after a hamstring injury. But the Bayern Munich wing-back, who was yet to appear at this World Cup, remained glaringly absent from the starting line-up. Still, Canada began on the front foot, racking up chances against South Africa’s low block. In the 22nd minute, a pinpoint Eustaquio free-kick found Derek Cornelius wide open on the six-yard line. The Canada center-back utterly mistimed his headed effort. South Africa threatened sporadically on the counter.
INGLEWOOD, California: Canada beat South Africa 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time strike by Stephen Eustaquio from distance on Sunday (Jun 28) to reach the World Cup last 16 for the first time in their history.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Stephen Eustáquio scored in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, and Canada beat South Africa 1-0 on Sunday for its first knockout match victory in a World Cup and a first-ever appearance in the round of 16.
After all the subterfuge, after all the sleepless nights and marathon planning sessions, Jesse Marsch looked at his roster before the most important game of their lives — before the first men’s World Cup knockout game in Canada’s history — and went with his runners. In every position, he took the fastest man he had. He went for lungs, and he went for legs.
South Korea coach Hong Myung-Bo resigned Sunday, a day after the team's quick elimination from the World Cup and following heavy criticism from the country's president.
PARIS, June 28 : Trayvon Bromell upset reigning 100m Olympic champion Noah Lyles to win the men's 100m at the Paris Diamond League on Sunday, while Armand Duplantis dominated the pole vault at Stade Charlety.
