Olympic champion Marco Odermatt won a men's World Cup giant slalom Saturday as the Swiss skier locked up the overall title.
Marco Odermatt stretched his lead at the top of the giant slalom World Cup standings with a fifth season victory. In the penultimate weekend of the season in Slovenia, Odermatt finished in a time of 2:16.65 to pip Alexis Pinturault of France and Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen to top spot.
Marco Odermatt all-but confirmed his second overall Alpine skiing World Cup title after he battled to another giant slalom victory in Kranjska Gora. Odermatt was the class of the field in the first run but looked tired in the second leg and just did enough to beat Alexis Pinturault by 0.23 seconds to win his fifth giant slalom of the season. Ad Only Aleksander Aamodt Kilde could mathematically beat Odermatt to the overall Crystal Globe, but he’s not racing in Slovenia this weekend, so the Swiss skier is guaranteed to wrap up the title after Sunday’s giant slalom.

Jonas Vingegaard's late attack on stage four of Paris-Nice «cost him» in his battle with Tadej Pogacar, believes Jumbo-Visma director Grischa Niermann. Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) had looked to be in control when he launched his effort with Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) alongside him as the two battled. Ad However the Slovenian ended 43 seconds clear of his rival, who ended in sixth position.
Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) won his first serious battle with Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) of 2023 after an uphill tear-up on Stage 4 at Paris-Nice, with the Slovenian moving into the overall lead after a stunning victory. Pogacar, still smarting from losing his grip on the yellow jersey to the Dane at the Tour de France last summer, launched a devastating attack with 2.4km remaining of the first summit finish to La Loge des Gardes.
