Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out with hamstring injury
Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will spend some time on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury during pre-season in Singapore, the club said on Friday. The 28-year-old England international got injured during Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on July 15.
CWG 2022: Led by Mirabai Chanu, lifters look to start India's medal run in style
The country’s weightlifters have been the second-biggest contributor – after shooting (135 medals) – to India’s medal haul at the CWG since the sport’s inclusion in the quadrennial meet at the Auckland edition in 1950, with 43 gold, 48 silver and 34 bronze and an overall tally of 125. India had finished on top of the medals tally in weightlifting at the Gold Coast Games in 2018, bringing home five gold, two silver and an equal number of bronze medals. Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai will headline India’s 15-member weightlifting contingent, which will contest in 14 different categories at the Games. Mirabai (49kg) will be in action on the opening day of the weightlifting competitions at the NEC Arena on Saturday, along with debutant Bindyarani Devi in the women’s 55kg category. Bindyarani had won the clean and jerk gold at the women’s Worlds in Tashkent in December last year, apart from a silver at the Commonwealth meet which were being held concurrently.

Commonwealth Games (CWG) will serve as a perfect launchpad for her quest to regain the world championship crown next month. Sindhu, who won a silver and a bronze in the last two editions, is chasing an elusive gold medal at the ongoing Games and thereafter her immediate target will be the Tokyo World Championships from August 22-28. "The ultimate goal is the Paris Olympics in 2024. But the focus right now is winning a CWG medal and then the World Championships," Sindhu told PTI during an interaction here. "Winning at the Commonwealth Games is a big achievement, it happens every four years. And representing our country at the biggest certainly gives a lot of pride. Hoping for the gold this time." Sindhu, who has claimed the Singapore Open recently, has not been able to get past the Tai Tzu Ying hurdle in recent events.

CWG 2022: India shuttlers begin title defence against Pakistan
Pakistan at the Arena Birmingham on Friday. Unlike cricket or hockey, where the atmosphere is electric, the Indian shuttlers are expected to ease past Pakistan. While the Indian squad boasts of big names, Pakistan have struggled to field a team. CWG 2022: Onus on Indian TT contingent to deliver
The Indian TT contingent arrived in Birmingham with history on its side following a rich haul of eight medals in the last edition at Gold Coast. All eyes will again be on poster girl Manika Batra when India begin action in the first two rounds of the team events at the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull. Batra almost single-handedly brought the game into limelight last time by winning the country's first gold medal in the women's singles event. She went on to win gold in the women's team event too, along with bagging a silver in women's double. She stamped her authority by ending the Singaporean supremacy in 2018.
