England coach Matthew Mott said he hopes Josh Hazlewood's comments that Australia might look to secure only a narrow victory over Scotland that would see England knocked out of the T20 World Cup were tongue in cheek.
Euro 2024 kicks off on Friday in Germany as the continent's footballing heavyweights prepare to fight it out over the next month with the aim of taking the crown away from reigning champions Italy. Germany play Scotland in the opening game in Munich and the host nation are hoping their journey will continue all the way to the final in Berlin on July 14. It is the first time the country has hosted a major men's international tournament since the 2006 World Cup, and it is a mouth-watering setting after the underwhelming nature of the last European Championship.
Ahead of Australia's T20 World Cup game against Scotland, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh got some interesting suggestion. Defending T20 World Cup champions England find themselves in a precarious spot after a washed out game and a heavy defeat against Australia, who have qualified for the Super Eights. Former Australia Test captain Tim Paine wants Mitchell Marsh and Co. to "manipulate" their final group game against Scotland to ensure that England are knocked out of the T20 World Cup. "Absolutely they should (manipulate the result) and I'm not even joking. I've spoken to people about this in the last few days. I'm dead serious," Paine said on Sen Radio.
The Euro 2024 host stadium in Munich will display rainbow colours to celebrate Christopher Street Day, the city's pride weekend, UEFA confirmed to AFP on Wednesday. Allianz Arena, which will host the opening match of Euro 2024 between Germany and Scotland, will be lit up in rainbow colours on June 22 and 23. It is Bayern Munich's home stadium in club football. There are no games planned in Munich for that weekend. UEFA told AFP that the arena would be illuminated in rainbow colours on request of the stadium management.
Fighting, form, and fun are the three big takeaways from Germany's preparations for its Euro 2024 opener, as the host nation enters the event in a beguiling spot where anything could happen.
Australia fast-bowler Josh Hazlewood said the chance to knock out defending champions England out of the 2024 T20 World Cup would be in the best interest of the side as well as for the other teams in the competition. His comments come after Australia chased down Namibia's 72 in just 5.4 overs to remain unbeaten in the tournament and secure their qualification for the Super Eight stage. They now need a narrow win over Scotland to ensure England are out of the competition even if the Jos Buttler-led side wins over Namibia and Oman.
