F1 Eyes Return Of Grand Prix In Africa; South Africa, Rwanda Main Contenders

Three decades after Formula One engines last roared on African tarmac, South Africa is mounting a bid to organise a new Grand Prix and bring the world championship back to the continent. Competition to host the high-octane spectacle is between two tracks: a street circuit in Cape Town and the less picturesque but historic Kyalami race track outside of Johannesburg. A committee set up by sports minister Gayton McKenzie will choose the winning bid in the third quarter of the year, committee member Mlimandlela Ndamase told AFP.

Okumagba emerges interim chairman as NSC, NFF end supporters clubs’ feud

The leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have scored a major point in the build-up to Super Eagles’ trip to Rwanda for the 2026 World Cup campaign by ending the “long feud” among supporters and clubs’ members.   Since the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup, the Supporters Club have not known peace. What started as a minnow disagreement among the members soon became a major issue, leading to the emergence of six different groups. While Vincent Okumagba presided over the Super Eagles Supporters Club, Rev. Sam Ikpea was chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters Club. The Football Fan Club of Nigeria was led by Kemi Popoola, just as Abayomi Ogunjimi was the leader of Authentic Nigeria Football and Allied Sports Supporters Club.

D’Tigers qualify for 2025 Afrobasket as Group B teams sail through

Nigeria has joined the three other countries in Group B of the 2025 Afrobasket qualifiers, Cape Verde, Libya, and Uganda, in qualifying for this year’s final championship slated for Angola even before yesterday’s final round of games in Libya.   Nigeria won two games and lost three to garner seven points, same with Uganda, which was adjudged good enough to see the D’Tigers through even if they lost yesterday’s final game against Cape Verde.   Yesterday’s final qualification games in Libya were just to fulfill the fixtures as all four sides from Group B will be in Angola.  D’Tigers defeated Libya in their opening game and also beat Uganda to atone for the three losses they recorded in the first qualifying window, but former champions, Morocco and Central African Republic (CAR) were not that lucky as they failed to make the grade in groups A and D respectively.    Among the teams that will be in Angola are the hosts (Angola), Egypt, Senegal, Tunisia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Nigeria. Also, in the race are Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, Madagascar, Mali, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cape Verde, and Libya.   The Afrobasket championship will be held in Luanda, Angola, from August 12 to 25, 2025.
