Alexander Zverev Thrashes Carlos Alcaraz, Sets Up Australian Open Semi-Final Clash With Daniil Medvedev

Alexander Zverev stunned dynamic Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday to surge into an Australian Open semi-final against Daniil Medvedev. The German sixth seed upset the world number two 6-1, 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena to make the last four at a Grand Slam for the seventh time. Top Ukrainian junior Yelyzaveta Kotliar said she was "deeply sorry" after her tennis federation criticised the 16-year-old for shaking the hand of a Russian opponent at the Australian Open. Kotliar came under scrutiny at the opening Grand Slam of the year when she congratulated Vlada Mincheva after being beaten in the first round of the girls' tournament. The handshake defied an unwritten rule among her fellow Ukrainians to not congratulate their Russian and Belarusian opponents as war rages in their homeland.

Daniil Medvedev 'Destroyed' By Australian Open Five-Setter

Two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev said he was "destroyed" physically after grinding past big-serving Hubert Hurkacz in five tough sets Wednesday, but would be fighting fit for his Australian Open semi-final. The Russian world number three eventually tamed the Polish ninth seed 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in draining heat on Rod Laver Arena after a contest lasting nearly four hours. Playing his 100th Grand Slam match, he is into an eighth major semi-final, but has only gone to win only one title -- at the 2021 US Open.
