BIRMINGHAM, England : Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia claimed a second WTA title in two weeks as China's Shuai Zhang retired injured in Sunday's final at the Rothesay Classic in Birmingham.
Former Sunderland loanee Callum Doyle has been named in the England Under-19 squad for the European Under-19 Championship in Slovakia. Doyle, who has now returned to parent club Manchester City, played a key role in the Three Lions’ qualification, featuring in five of their six matches.
Romanian Halep, the second seed, had been due to play Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia, winner of last week's Nottingham Open, for a place in the final in the pre-Wimbledon grass-court tournament. "Rothesay Classic Birmingham matches rescheduled due to rain - play will resume Sunday 19 June," the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) said in a statement.
Boulter had been in career-best form at the tournament, defeating Alison Riske in the first round of the Wimbledon warm-up before knocking out former top-10 player Caroline Garcia. But second seed Halep ultimately proved too strong in a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
