MONTEVIDEO: Uruguay’s record goalscorer Luis Suarez on Monday received his first call-up under new coach Marcelo Bielsa who named the 36-year-old in his squad to face Argentina this week in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Uruguay's record goalscorer Luis Suarez on Monday received his first call-up under new coach Marcelo Bielsa who named the 36-year-old in his squad to face Argentina this week in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Suarez, with 68 international goals to his name, has been in superb form for Brazilian club Gremio with 16 goals in 29 games but has not featured for Uruguay since Bielsa took over in May. Thursday's match against Argentina will be his first for the national team since they were eliminated from the World Cup in Qatar in the group stages last year.
Uruguay's record scorer Luis Suarez is back in the squad for the first time since the World Cup after being called up on Monday for their next two qualifiers but Edinson Cavani is out injured.
Manchester United's Diogo Dalot has withdrawn from Portugal's squad for the international break due to personal reasons. Dalot was set to feature for Portugal in their two upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying games, but the player has been released for unspecified personal reasons following talks with manager Roberto Martinez.
Talismanic India striker Sunil Chhetri believes his team is "strong" and "more prepared" than previous occasions to make it to the next round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers as the players have had good game time under their belts this year. The 39-year-old Chhetri will lead India into Round 2 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Joint Qualification campaign when they take on Kuwait in the opening away tie on Thursday. The stalwart said the fine performances against international sides at home had given the team a more settled look. "I think it is just the morale of the team, or what has happened in the last 6-8 months. A lot of boys have taken their places in the team. And that is why we are probably more prepared," Chhetri told AIFF on Monday.
DUBAI: Saudi driver and two-time world champion Yazeed Al-Rajhi has secured runner-up position in the 2023 World Cup for Cross-Country Bajas after finishing second at the Dubai International Baja, the last race of the season.
