Poland captain Robert Lewandowski will miss his country's Euro 2024 opener this weekend with a thigh injury, the Polish football federation's doctor said on Tuesday. Lewandowski, 35, will be absent to face the Netherlands on June 16 after suffering the injury in Monday's 2-1 win in a friendly against Turkey. Poland then play Austria on June 21 and the tournament's joint favourites France four days later. "We are doing everything so that Robert can play in the second match against Austria," doctor Jacek Jaroszewski said in a statement.
The Netherlands added Borussia Dortmund defender Ian Maatsen to their Euro 2024 squad on Tuesday, after losing two key players to injury including talismanic midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Maatsen's call-up was as a replacement for Barcelona star De Jong, who has not recovered from an ankle injury that has dogged him all season, the Dutch Football Association said. Adding to coach Ronald Koeman's woes, midfielder Teun Koopmeiners will also not be going to the tournament in Germany after suffering an injury in the Oranje's final warm-up game against Iceland.

Poland's talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski came off injured on Monday after 32 minutes as they won their last Euro 2024 warm-up 2-1 against Turkey in Warsaw. His strike partner in Hellas Verona's Karol Swiderski had already left the field after hurting his right ankle celebrating scoring the goal that gave Poland a 12th-minute lead. Baris Yilmaz levelled for Turkey after 77 minutes but Nicola Zalewski scored a winner in added time.
On paper, this group contains three teams who will look to go deep in the tournament. Three-times winners Spain, defending champions Italy, and Croatia, who know what life at the business end of recent major tournaments is all about, will face off knowing that all three could all qualify for the round of 16.
