The decision taken by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to include a reserve day only for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match between India and Pakistan on Sunday was met with a lot of criticism on social media. The group stage match between the two teams was abandoned due to rain and the authorities decided to add a reserve day in order to make sure that the cricket fans could enjoy the much-anticipated encounter. However, with no other Super 4 game having a reserve day, fans were quick to point out the partiality on display and called for all matches to be treated equally in the competition.

National Under-19 football head coach Shuvendu Panda on Friday announced a 23-member Indian squad for the SAFF U-19 Championship, to commence in Kathmandu on September 21. The squad flew to Saudi Arabia for an exposure-cum-training camp early on Friday from where they will travel to the Nepal capital on September 19. India has been drawn in Group B along with Bhutan and Bangladesh, while Group A comprises the hosts, Maldives and Pakistan.

Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. As per ACC, if adverse weather suspends play during the India and Pakistan game, the match will continue on September 11 from the point it was suspended. In such an eventuality, ticket-holders are advised to hold on to their match tickets which will remain valid and will be utilised for the reserve day. It also has to be noted that the India vs Pakistan contest is the only fixture to have a Reserve Day in the Super 4 stage. None of the other matches will have this option available for teams.

Leading target Mohamed Salah may not have joined Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema by moving to the lucrative Saudi Pro League, but it seems inevitable more stars will eventually be lured away from Europe’s biggest clubs. Liverpool last week reportedly rejected a bid worth 150 million pounds ($188 million) from Al-Ittihad for Salah and despite speculation a renewed offer would come before Thursday’s deadline, no deal was struck for the Egypt international. There is, however, little suggestion Saudi Arabia’s spectacular spending will end there as the country has sought to move its way into international sports, investing in recent years in golf, boxing, Formula One racing and tennis, as well as soccer. Based on reported fees, Saudi clubs paid just over $1 billion on players, which would place it behind only the English Premier League in terms of global spending during the window. Then there are the large salaries said to be on offer, with Ronaldo’s deal reportedly worth up to $200 million a year.
