COLOMBO : Australia can expect a trial by spin when Pat Cummins and his men lock horns with Sri Lanka in a two-test series in Galle beginning on Wednesday.
Australia's Mitchell Swepson will play the opening Test against Sri Lanka, with touring skipper Pat Cummins on Tuesday calling the leg-spinner an "important cog" of their bowling. The 28-year-old Swepson will partner premier spinner Nathan Lyon at the start of the two-match series in Galle on Wednesday where the pitch is expected to be a turner. Cummins stopped short of disclosing the full Australian XI with doubts over batsman Travis Head who injured his hamstring during the team's loss in the one-day internationals.
Olympic and World Cup medallist Varinder Singh, who was an integral part of some of India's memorable victories in the 1970s, died in Jalandhar on Tuesday morning. He was 75. Varinder Singh was part of the gold-medal winning Indian team at the 1975 men's Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. This remains India's only gold medal at the prestigious tournament where the country had beaten arch-rivals Pakistan 2-1 in the final.

Pakistan will complete their warm-up for this year's ICC T20 Cricket World Cup with a tri-series against New Zealand and Bangladesh in early October. Babar Azam's side will travel to New Zealand at the start of October for a minimum of four T20I matches in Christchurch ahead of their T20 World Cup opener against arch-rival India at the MCG on October 23. It will be the first time Babar has played an international T20 match on New Zealand soil since the start of 2018 after the Pakistan captain missed the 2020/21 tour due to a thumb injury.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said on Tuesday. The series will be held between November 18 to 30 and New Zealand will return to India for a white-ball series in January next year. "India will arrive in New Zealand at the conclusion of the world cup to play the BLACKCAPS in three T20s at Wellington, Tauranga and Napier, and three ODIs at Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch," NZC said in a release.
England beat the Black Caps by seven wickets in the third Test at Headingley on Monday to sweep the series but they might find New Zealand a tougher prospect on home tracks in Wellington and Tauranga in the new year. The series opener at Bay Oval will be the first day-night Test in New Zealand since 2018, when England were beaten by an innings and 49 runs at Eden Park. The Test world champions will also host a two-match series against Sri Lanka in March, New Zealand Cricket said on Tuesday as it announced the 2022/23 home international schedule. The Black Caps are currently languishing in eighth place in the World Test Championship standings and will need strong performances on home soil if they are to have any chance of defending their title.
Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis formed one of the greatest bowling combinations to ever play the sport and the opposition batters always had to be at their best whenever they came up against this deadly bowling duo. Both had the ability to make the ball talk -- be it with the new ball or with the old ball. However, there was always this talk of the pair not getting along with each other. Akram has now opened up on his equation with Waqar, admitting that both of them had their differences but there was always a healthy competition.
