Bayern battle back to shock Arsenal in Women’s Champions League

PARIS: Bayern Munich overturned a two-goal deficit to stun holders Arsenal 3-2 in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday. Emily Fox’s early header and Mariona Caldentey’s 23rd-minute shot from the edge of the box appeared to have put Arsenal in total control in Munich. But Bayern dug deep in the second half to execute an astonishing turnaround. Alara began the fightback in the 67th minute, with substitute Pernille Harder’s superb strike drawing the Germans level, before Glodis Viggosdottir snatched the winner, prodding home Klara Buehl’s low cross with four minutes left. “To be honest, this is a winning team with a winning mentality,” Bayern coach Jose Barcala told Disney+. “We always believe we can win the game even when we are 2-0 down.

Sri Lanka board tells cricketers to stay in Pakistan after bomb blast

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Wednesday told its players to remain in Pakistan or risk facing a “formal review” after members of the squad declared their intention to depart early from their tour of the country due to security concerns. The players expressed fears for their safety following Tuesday’s suicide bombing in the Pakistani capital, which killed 12 and wounded 27 outside a court. SLC issued a statement saying it had instructed the team to go ahead with their ongoing tour of Pakistan as scheduled despite an unspecified number of players requesting to return home. “If any player, players, or member of the support staff return despite SLC’s directives, a formal review will be conducted... and an appropriate decision will be made,” the board said. It added that replacements would be sent to ensure the tour continues without interruption. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that the second ODI scheduled for Thursday has been put back by one day to Friday while Saturday’s third match will now be played on Sunday.

Jude Bellingham facing fight to get back in England team

LONDON: Jude Bellingham might have to wait to get back in the England team, with coach Thomas Tuchel saying Wednesday he is in no rush to change his system to accommodate the return of the Real Madrid star. Since Bellingham last played for England — in a 3-1 loss to Senegal in a friendly in June — Morgan Rogers has been installed in the No. 10 role and starred in recent 5-0 wins over Serbia and Latvia that helped to clinch a spot in next year’s World Cup. Bellingham is back in the squad after fully recovering from shoulder surgery and Tuchel sees him as a No.
