ZURICH: World Cup -bound Iraq have two new players for possible selection after FIFA approved eligibility for Nashville SC midfielder Ahmed Qasem and Dundee United defender Dario Naamo. Both comply with FIFA rules for a binding change of national eligibility because of family ties to Iraq. The national team qualified in March for their first World Cup in 40 years despite travel problems during the Middle East conflict. It’s in a tough World Cup group that includes France, Norway and Senegal, who all feature stellar forward in Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Sadio Mané. Iraq coach Graham Arnold previously led his native Australia at the 2022 World Cup and now can pick two more players nurtured in Europe. The 22-year-old Qasem was born in Sweden and represented that country at youth level through the Under-21s. He moved to Major League Soccer team Nashville last year from Elfsborg. The 20-year-old Naamo was born in Finland and was still playing for its Under-21 team in March.
Ruud crushes Musetti to reach Italian Open quarters, Sinner awaits derby
ROME: Casper Ruud strolled into the Italian Open quarter-finals on Tuesday after easily beating home hope Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-1, as Jannik Sinner gets set for a derby with qualifier Andrea Pellegrino. Clay court specialist Ruud is yet to drop a set in Rome and he looked in fine form on a windy center court, in stark contrast to eighth seed Musetti who has clearly been struggling physically in Rome. Musetti was in tears at the end of his third-round win over Francisco Cerundolo and had to take a medical time-out for a problem with his left thigh during the second set against Ruud. The Norwegian, who was destroyed by Sinner in last year’s quarter-finals in Rome, is on the other side of the draw from the world number one and will face either Karen Khachanov or Dino Prizmic in the last eight. Croatian qualifier Prizmic is bidding to reach his first Masters 1000 quarter-final after announcing himself on the big stage by knocking out Novak Djokovic in the second round. Sinner will take part in a David v Goliath clash with countryman Pellegrino as he tries to extend his record-breaking run of five Masters 1000 titles. Pellegrino, 29, is 155th in the world and before this week had never played in the main draw of a top-ranked ATP event. Should Sinner prevail at the Foro Italico, he will be the first Italian to win there since Adriano Panatta 50 years ago, and would complete his collection of Master 1000 tournaments. Reitan wins first PGA Tour title and Snedeker wins for first time in almost 8 years
CHARLOTTE, N.C.: Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan shot 2-under 69 on Sunday to earn a two-shot win over Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Hojgaard at the Truist Championship for his first victory on the PGA Tour. Reitan, who won twice previously on the European Tour, finished at 15-under 269 and secured his spot in the Masters next year. Alex Fitzpatrick, the 54-hole leader, finished three shots back after shooting 73. Reitan, a PGA Tour rookie who started the round one shot behind Fitzpatrick, was even par for the day after 13 holes and one shot behind Fowler, who surged to the lead after shooting 30 on the front nine. But Fowler, who started the day seven shots behind, couldn’t sustain the momentum and shot 65. Reitan birdied the reachable par-4 14th and the par-5 15th to pull ahead. LPGA Tour WEST CALDWELL, N.J.: Jeeno Thitikul fought off one final challenge Sunday and pulled away with a pair of late birdies for a 3-under 69 to win the Mizuho Americas Open by four shots over Ruoning Yin, giving the Thai player her second LPGA Tour victory this year. Fitzpatrick storms into lead at PGA Truist Championship
WASHINGTON: England’s Alex Fitzpatrick stormed into a one-shot lead at the Truist Championship on Saturday, firing a seven-under-par 64 in the latest impressive display of his fledgling PGA Tour career. Fitzpatrick drained eight birdies and one bogey to finish the third round on 14-under at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, one shot clear of fellow rookie Kristoffer Reitan of Norway, who also shot a 64. Fitzpatrick only earned his PGA Tour card after partnering elder brother Matt to victory at the Zurich Classic pairs tournament a fortnight ago, and followed that up with a respectable top-10 finish at the Cadillac Championship in Florida last week.
