Indian weightlifter Popy Hazarika finished a disappointing seventh in the women's 59kg event at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. The lifter from Assam had a total lift of 183kg (81kg 102kg). It was the first of the six weightlifting events so far that didn't yield a medal for India. Rafiatu Folashade Lawal of Nigeria won the gold with an effort of 206 kg (90kg 116kg).

The 19-year-old weightlifter smashed two Games records on his way to a sensational gold medal win at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games as he added a second yellow metal to India's tally on Sunday. The medal rush from the sport of weightlifting continued for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games as Jeremy Lalrinnunga won a gold in the men's 67kg category. This is India's second gold medal of the campaign after ace lifter Mirabai Chanu kept her promise and delivered a gold on Saturday. Jeremy created a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch event, by picking up 140 kg.
India's Bindyarani Devi won India's fourth medal on Day 2 of the ongoing Commonwealth Games as she returned with a silver medal in the women's 55 kg weightlifting. It was looking like she will win a bronze when she failed in her second clean and jerk attempt of 114kg. But the weightlifter did not lose heart as she attempted a 116 kg lift, going into the second position, and finishing with just 1 kg less than gold medallist Adijat Olarinoye from Nigeria.
