AUCKLAND : More appears to have been merrier at the Women's World Cup as teams that benefited from the expansion of the field to 32 in Australia and New Zealand have largely held up to scrutiny in the group stage.
MELBOURNE : A Women's World Cup that had been in danger of losing both its co-hosts before the knockout phase enjoyed a vital shot in the arm when Australia raced into the last 16 with a 4-0 trouncing of Canada.
MELBOURNE: Hayley Raso scored a first half brace and Mary Fowler struck after the break as Australia crushed Canada 4-0 on Monday (Jul 31) to storm into the last 16 of the Women's World Cup and send the Olympic champions spinning out of the tournament.
Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan was determined to keep a clean sheet against Nigeria, producing a point-blank save in the second half to help Vera Pauw's get a point on the board before bidding farewell to the Women's World Cup.
Monday marked the end of the road for the Canadian team at the Women's World Cup. Australia's Matildas came out blazing, not waltzing, and solidified their qualification to the next round. Along with Australia, Nigeria's Super Falcons also move on with the Canadians in third place in Group B.
