The Nigeria international, 27, collided with the post in the 88th minute of the 2-2 draw at the City Ground as he attempted to get on the end of a cross from Anthony Elanga while under challenge from the Foxes' Facundo Buonanotte. "The club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday's match against Leicester City," said a Forest statement.

Awoniyi had stretched in a failed bid to convert Anthony Elanga's cross and tried to carry on playing after receiving several minutes of treatment. The true extent of the injury was only discovered by Forest's medical staff on Monday and reports said he was immediately taken for the surgery, which was not believed to be life-threatening.
