Saudi 2034 World Cup bid boosted by full AFC support, FIFA’s Asian tournament pledge

GENEVA: Saudi Arabia’s FIFA-favored bid to host the men’s World Cup in 2034 passed on Wednesday one of the few barriers left in what seems an inevitable win. One week after revealing talks with Australia about bidding to co-host the 2034 World Cup, Indonesian soccer leader Erick Thohir said his federation is now with Saudi Arabia. Thohir’s change of plan was detailed in a statement on the Indonesian soccer federation website hours before an online meeting of the Asian Football Confederation, whose 47 members include Australia, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. During the meeting, FIFA President Gianni Infantino urged AFC members to “be united for the 2034 World Cup.” Infantino has long been a close ally of Saudi soccer and the kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and FIFA’s surprise decision two weeks ago to fast-track bidding for the 2034 men’s tournament was seen as favorable for them. AFC members responded quickly to Infantino’s urging and the Japan federation proposed united support behind the Saudi bid backed by Uzbekistan, Lebanon and India. “Japan has a plan to host the FIFA World Cup by 2050 but now it’s time for Asia to get united and make a single bid (for 2034),” Japanese federation official Tsuneyasu Miyamoto said, praising Saudi Arabia for a “long football history, massive passion and a wonderful vision for 2034.” Australian officials did not take part in the online discussion. After an initial technical problem connecting to the meeting, Saudi federation president Yasser al Misehal said: “It’s always known that Asia is always united.” “We have been overwhelmed by a huge number of supporting letters, announcements from all over the world.

Virat Kohli Leaves "Biggest impact" After Phenomenal Fielding In Cricket World Cup

India's unbeaten run in the ongoing World Cup has been a result of their all-round performances with the bat and the ball as well as one of the less talked about aspects in cricket, fielding. Stalwart batter Virat Kohli who is well known for his refined batting skills, has been a crucial figure in the field as he tops the chart of players with the biggest impact on the field after the conclusion of the first three games for each country.

Argentina inspired by historic 2022 win ahead of New Zealand test

Argentina have invoked their historic victory over New Zealand last year in their quest to pull off a seismic upset by winning Friday's World Cup semi-final. The Pumas prevailed 25-18 in Christchurch to topple the All Blacks for the first time and skipper Julian Montoya says that has instilled the belief that they can engineer a dramatic upset at the Stade de France. "As soon as you get on the field you believe you can win. It's true we have some firsts under our belts," Montoya said. "We were the first Argentina team to beat New Zealand and that confirms we can beat anyone. "I have full confidence in our team and our players. This is the moment to play the best game of our lives and give everything." The All Blacks are known for their ability to conjure spectacular tries but Argentina head coach Michael Cheika insists they are also accomplished at the less glamorous parts of the game. "New Zealand have always been an example in rugby, a benchmark. They make you think of high-level skills in a really open game but there are always threats in the line-out, mauls and rucks," Cheika said. "In a World Cup semi-final they are dangerous everywhere. We have been training as best we can, we will be ready. We'll see what happens." Argentina have made one change to the side that defeated Wales 29-17 in the quarter-finals, bringing in Gonzalo Bertranou for Tomas Cubelli at scrum-half. Matias Alemanno, Agustin Creevy, Facundo Isa, Tomas Lavanini, Nicolas Sanchez, Guido Petti and Montoya are the survivors from the Pumas' last World Cup semi-final against Australia in 2015.
