KARACHI: Gloom and demands for wholesale change engulfed cricket-crazy Pakistan on Tuesday after the hosts crashed out of the Champions Trophy in the group stage, barely a week into celebrating the return of a major tournament.
DUBAI: Underarm serves, a questionable VAR call, fiery competition, and a rowdy crowd: Felix Auger-Aliassime’s 7-6 (7), 6-7 (4), 6-3 win over Alexander Bublik in the Dubai first round on Tuesday certainly had it all.
India captain Rohit Sharma had promised to take all-rounder Axar Patel as a compensation after dropping a sitter to deny the latter a hat-trick in the Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh last week. Now, Axar has revealed that Rohit is yet to fulfill his promise. During the match against Bangladesh, Axar was on a hat-trick after dismissing Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim off consecutive deliveries in the second and third ball of the 9th over. He almost made it three in three balls, only for Rohit to drop Towhid Hridoy on the hat-trick ball.
New Zealand's victory over Bangladesh in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Group A match on Monday proved to be the final nail in the coffin for hosts Pakistan. After defeats against New Zealand and India in their first two matches, Pakistan's campaign was on the brink. As the Kiwis outscored the Bangla Tigers in Rawalpindi, Pakistan's elimination was confirmed. Courtesy of their early exit from the tournament, Mohammad Rizwan's men went on to register a few embarrassing records to their name.
Ciarán Frawley won't be available for Leinster this weekend, but fellow Ireland internationals Jack Boyle and Jimmy O’Brien trained with the team on Monday afternoon.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken serious note of a security breach that occurred during the ICC Champions Trophy match between New Zealand and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, where a spectator entered the field of play and attempted to hug Kiwi batter Rachin Ravindra. The pitch invader was swiftly removed by security officials and was later arrested. The PCB has since announced that the individual has been permanently banned from all cricket venues in Pakistan. "The PCB has taken serious note of the security breach that occurred yesterday when a spectator entered the field of play. Ensuring the safety of players and officials remains our top priority. As a responsible organisation, we have engaged with local security agencies, who have committed to increasing security personnel around the field of play at all venues and strengthening access control measures," the PCB said in a statement.
Champions Trophy exit in just 6 days - that's the reality for the Pakistan cricket in the ongoing tournament. Being the hosts of the event, Pakistan were expected to challenge for the title but little went their way since the tournament began. After losing the match against New Zealand, Pakistan struggled to stand up against Rohit Sharma's Team India on Sunday. As analysts sit down and opine on what went wrong for Pakistan, Indian cricket great Sunil Gavaskar feels the level that Mohammad Rizwan's side has is just not good enough.
