On Day 3 of the rescheduled fifth Test between India and England at Edgbaston, Jonny Bairstow looked to be struggling as Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah zipped the ball around. What ensued was a feisty exchange as Virat Kohli began to sledge him. Bairstow reacted as well as one could, and switched gears to put the pressure right back on the bowlers. He smashed a 119-ball century, hitting 14 fours and two sixes to help take England from 84/5 to 284.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant are currently unbeaten at the crease on 50 and 30, respectively. India gained an upper hand after bundling out England for 284 in the first innings, taking a lead of 132. Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers for India as he scalped four wickets. Speaking to reporters after the close of play on Day 3, Siraj talked about his mindset, the pitch conditions and he even termed Pujara a "warrior".

Yet, the man who terrorised New Zealand, with two brutal hundreds, could hardly lay bat on ball as Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah put him through a trial by fire late on day two as he went back unbeaten on 12 off 47 balls to fight another day. He would have hoped that a brighter forecast with the sun out on day three at Edgbaston on Sunday, would have made life a lot easier. But he didn’t find any favours from both Bumrah and Shami. Shami was relentless with his line and cut Bairstow into half at least a dozen times. He also used the away-going delivery smartly to induce the false shot. He remained scoreless for 20 deliveries as all the talk of 'Bazball' went out of the window.
