Schouten of the Netherlands scooped up her second Beijing Olympics gold medal when she won the women's 5000-metre speed skating event on Thursday, as the Dutch team continued to dominate on the ice. For the second time in the Winter Games, Schouten also broke an Olympic record that had stood untouched for 20 years since Salt Lake City as she whizzed around the oval in ever faster laptimes and crossed the finish line in six minutes and 43.51 seconds.
FIH Pro League matches against India to be played in Bhubaneswar on February 19 and 20 due to rise in Covid-19 cases in the Netherlands, especially the highly contagious omicron variant of the infection. The Royal Dutch Hockey Association (KNHB) said it has requested the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to postpone the matches to a later date. Irene Schouten produced the best Winter Olympic 5000m performance in women's speed skating by winning her second gold of the Games in Beijing. The Dutch athlete — who is also the 3000m champion — crossed the line in an Olympic record time of 6:43.51, smashing the previous best mark by over three seconds which was set 20 years ago in Salt Lake City, to beat Canada's Isabelle Weidemann and Martina Sablikova to the title.
