Commonwealth Games 2022: Updated Medals Tally, India At Sixth

The Indian contingent are displaying a good show at the ongoing Commonwealth Games and they have won 9 medals so far, including three gold. The first gold for India came through Mirabai Chanu on Saturday, and the rest of the two were also won by weightlifters -- Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli. Apart from three gold, the contingent has won three silver and three bronze as well. Judoka Shushila Devi also won a silver medal in the women's 48kg category on Monday.

BIRMINGHAM, England: Uganda's Victor Kiplangat took a wrong turn but still found his way to marathon gold at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday (Jul 30), providing some late drama to what had been an uneventful race.

India's Nitendra Singh Rawat finished 12th in the men's marathon race in the Commonwealth Games here on Saturday. The 35-year-old Rawat clocked 2 hour 19 minutes and 22 seconds in the race won by Uganda's Victor Kiplangat (2:10:55). Tanzania's Alphonce Felix Simbu (2:12:29) and Kenya's Michael Mugo Githae (2:13:16) took the silver and bronze respectively. Rawat has a personal best of 2:16:05 he had clocked at the New Delhi Marathon in March. He was eight minutes 27 seconds behind the gold winner.

The India women's hockey team will open their Commonwealth Games campaign with a Group game against minnows Ghana at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash centre. The Indian team failed to impress at the Hockey World Cup, finishing ninth earlier this year. The Indian team is placed in Pool A alongside hosts England, Canada, Wales and Ghana, while Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Scotland and Kenya complete Pool B. The women's team last won a medal back in 2006 Melbourne Games, where they had won a silver.
