According to UNICEF, nearly 230 million children under the age of five around the world have never had their birth registered. These ghost children are thus deprived of access to fundamental rights. The problem is most acute in Ivory Coast, where the number of unregistered children appears to be increasing. The births of an estimated 35 percent of children in the country are not recorded.
