MILAN, Italy : Luka Modric scored his first goal for AC Milan to secure a 1-0 home win over Bologna on Sunday, a hard-fought Serie A result tempered by an injury to goalkeeper and captain Mike Maignan and a red card for coach Massimiliano Allegri.
MISANO ADRIATICO, Italy : Ducati's Marc Marquez resisted a spirited challenge from Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi to win the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday, taking his revenge after crashing out of the lead in Saturday's sprint, and inching closer to the MotoGP title.
Australia's comeback attempt from a 2-0 deficit fell short on Sunday when Belgium's Raphael Collignon beat Aleksandar Vukic in the decisive fifth match in Sydney to secure a 3-2 win in their qualifying tie and a place in November's Davis Cup Final 8.
WASHINGTON: England’s Charley Hull birdied four of the last eight holes to grab a one-stroke lead over Thailand’s top-ranked Jeeno Thitikul after Saturday’s third round of the LPGA Queen City Championship. The 29-year-old Briton fired a five-under par 67 to stand on 16-under 200 after 54 holes at TPC River’s Bend in Cincinnati, Ohio. “I put in some good work when I was home, all the work that I could do and (I) feel relaxed,” Hull said after being home last month. “Just (have to) play like I did the last few days and go out there and have some fun.” Jeeno fired a 68 to stand second on 201 with Japan’s Chizato Iwai and Miyu Yamashita sharing third on 202 after each shot 66. Hull has won four times on the Ladies European Tour, most recently at Riyadh last November, and twice on the LPGA Tour, at the 2016 Tour Championship and 2022 Volunteers of America Classic. This marks the eighth time she has led or shared the lead entering an LPGA final round, with both her tour wins coming from those tournaments. Hull answered her second bogey of the week, at the par-three fifth, with birdies at the par-three seventh and par-four ninth holes, then added back-to-back birdies at the par-five 11th and par-three 12th, another at 15 and a final birdie at the par-five 18th. “Just played pretty solid,” Hull said.
FLORENCE, Italy :Napoli strolled to a comfortable 3-1 win away to Fiorentina on Saturday, with Rasmus Hojlund scoring on his debut as the defending champions continued their perfect start to the season and moved back to the top of the Serie A standings.
LIVERPOOL, England: Aston Villa manager Unai Emery welcomed the return of Emi Martinez and wants the Argentina goalkeeper to feel “comfortable and confident” in the team after failing to secure a move to Manchester United late in the transfer window. Martinez, the World Cup-winning ‘keeper from 2022, was left out of Villa’s lineup in their last match before the international break because of the uncertainty over his future at the club.
GLASGOW: Rangers manager Russell Martin said he will not accede to fans’ demands to resign after a 2-0 home defeat to Hearts saw the Glasgow giants get off to their worst league start since 1978. A double from Lawrence Shankland delivered a first win at Ibrox since 2014 for top-of-the-table Hearts, who open up a nine-point lead on Rangers. Celtic can also go nine clear of their local rivals should the Scottish champions win at Kilmarnock on Sunday. Martin was hounded with chants for his exit during the 90 minutes after failing to win any of his first five Scottish Premiership matches. “The fans are entitled to their opinion so I can’t come out here and criticize that,” said Martin after replying “no” to whether he will resign. “I don’t think many of them (the supporters) wanted me here in the first place.” The appointment of the former Southampton boss appears to be a misguided first move from Rangers’ new American owners. Despite overhauling the squad with 13 new signings, Rangers’ hopes of adding to their sole league title in the past 14 years are already fading fast. “We have a lot of new guys in there. We have a lot of players trying to feel their way in an environment that’s really difficult to feel their way into,” added Martin. “There’s anxiety at the moment.
