'Outstanding' Tarik Skubal leads Tigers past Guardians in G1 - ESPN

CLEVELAND — When it comes to winning in the MLB postseason, circa 2025, you hear a lot about high-octane bullpens and home run hitters. But when you have a throwback ace like Tarik Skubal on your side, starting pitching and a little small-ball can still get it done.

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad fell to a second straight defeat in the Asian Champions League Elite, losing 1-0 to Al-Ahli Dubai on Tuesday. Al-Ittihad, which fired coach Laurent Blanc three days earlier, remain without a point after two games. Elsewhere, Qatar’s Al-Sadd drew 1-1 with Sharjah of the United Arab Emirates. Former Barca chief Bartomeu accused of disloyal administration

Bartomeu and other former club directors are accused of making unjustified payments between 2015 and 2019Prosecutors have accused Bartomeu of “disloyal administration” and of having “caused damage” to the clubBARCELONA: Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been accused by Spanish prosecutors of disloyal administration, according to documents seen by AFP on Tuesday.Bartomeu and other former club directors are accused of making unjustified payments between 2015 and 2019.According to a court document seen by AFP, the prosecution has accused the former Barcelona president of “disloyal administration” and of having “caused damage” to the club by “failing to fulfil the duties of diligence and loyalty” implied by his role. The former Barca chief, in charge from 2014 to 2020, will have to explain alleged hidden commissions paid, most notably in the club’s signing of Brazil winger Malcom from Bordeaux in 2018 for over 40 million euros ($47 million).Other areas in which there are apparent irregularities include the legal case surrounding the club’s signing of Neymar, and the Espai Barca project to transform the Camp Nou stadium and surrounding area.Current Barcelona president Joan Laporta presented an in-depth report to prosecutors earlier this year, after hiring investigators to analyze how the club had been run in the years prior.Barcelona have been in a tough financial position over the past few years after heavy spending during Bartomeu’s reign, including buying Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann for a combined total cost of more than 400 million euros.A statement issued by Bartomeu’s lawyers said that although he may have “made mistakes” during his reign, there is not “the slightest

Mbappé rewards Madrid’s long journey with hat trick in 5-0 win at Kairat Almaty in Champions League

ALMATY: Kylian Mbappé scored a hat trick as Real Madrid shrugged off any travel weariness in a 5-0 win at Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan on Tuesday. The 15-time European champions traveled nearly 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers) to play the game in the eastern Kazakh city, Kairat’s first home match in the competition. The enthusiasm showed with Dastan Satpayev testing Thibault Courtois after just 13 seconds and Jorginho trying his luck a minute later. Mbappé settled any visiting nerves by dispatching a penalty in the 25th after goalkeeper Sherkhan Kalmurza had brought down Franco Mastantuono. Mbappé went close again before the break but ultimately the visitors appeared content to let the ball circulate without forcing the initiative too much. The second half started in the same vein until Courtois caught the Kairat defense out with a long clearance and Mbappé lobbed the ball over Kalmurza in the 52nd for his second goal. Kairat might have had a way back into the game when Dani Ceballos was penalized for an apparent foul on Valery Gromyko, but referee Marco Guida changed his mind after a VAR review. Arda Güler sent Mbappé though for his third goal in the 73rd, when the France star completed his fourth hat trick in the competition.

PSG’s injuries mount but Luis Enrique unfazed before Barcelona game in Champions League

PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique refused to complain about the mounting injuries affecting his team before Wednesday’s Champions League match at Barcelona. Defending champion PSG will be without star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and forward Désiré Doué. They are all out injured along with central defender Marquinhos, the club captain, while PSG have doubts over the fitness of key midfielders Vitinha and João Neves. “You can either get results or make excuses. Whoever plays tomorrow is part of a real team,” Luis Enrique said Tuesday at a pre-match news conference.

French Open to stick with line judges for 2026 edition

The French Open will continue to use line judges for the 2026 edition despite the other three Grand Slams having already switched to an Electronic Line Calling (ELC) system, the French Tennis Federation said. The ELC system was first deployed as an experiment at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan in 2017 before being more widely adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ATP Tour has implemented the system at all of its events from this season, and while the Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon now rely on the technology Roland Garros is opting to retain the human element for at least another year. The French federation (FFT) said its officials had delivered a high standard of refereeing at the tournament. “For the next Roland Garros, the FFT will continue to highlight the excellence of French refereeing, recognized throughout the world, and which brings complete satisfaction to the organization of the tournament,” it said on Monday. In the 2025 edition of the major, 404 referees were present with 284 from France alone. At Roland Garros, officials can inspect traces left by the ball on the red dust to help them make decisions, though there remains room for human error. ELC, which has been developed to account for the differences in grass, hardcourt and claycourt surfaces, is now also available across a wider range of tournaments below the Grand Slams and elite tours. While it is mostly popular, the system received mixed reviews at Wimbledon this year due to malfunctions, while some players were left baffled by ELC calls during claycourt events in Madrid and Stuttgart.

Iga Swiatek may skip mandatory tennis events due to packed schedule

World number two Iga Swiatek said the tennis season is too long and too intense and the smart option for her would be to cut back on her schedule for the sake of her health, even if that means skipping mandatory tournaments. The men’s and women’s circuits have faced criticism due to their 11-month seasons, and both the tours have come under fresh scrutiny during the “Asian swing” with five matches at the China Open unable to be completed on Monday due to injuries. Camila Osorio retired after she dropped the first set to Swiatek, while Lois Boisson, Zheng Qinwen, Lorenzo Musetti and Jakub Mensik were unable to complete their matches in Beijing. “I think people are more fatigued,” six-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek told reporters. “Unfortunately, the Asian Swing is the hardest part because you feel like the season is going to finish soon, but you still need to push. “I don’t know yet how my career is going to look like in a couple years. Maybe I will have to choose some tournaments and skip them, even though they are mandatory.
