CAPE TOWN : South Africa picked an experienced 15-man squad for next month’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan with 10 players having competed at the last World Cup in India in late 2023.
A recent interview of former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary went viral on internet in which he made some relentless attack at current national team head coach Gautam Gambhir. Tiwary even went on to call Gambhir a 'hypocrite', owing to his recent results with the Indian team, particularly the 3-0 clean sweep to New Zealand at home and 1-3 loss against Australia Down Under. While reacting to the scathing attack targeted at Gambhir, another ex-India player Aakash Chopra criticised Tiwari. Now, Tiwari has issued a clarification, giving a direct reply to Chopra on social media.
Former India star Robin Uthappa has attempted a fresh jab at current Team India star Virat Kohli, suggesting he cherry-picked players in the team during his captaincy reign on the basis of likes and dislikes. Uthappa, who has been making headlines of late with some bold comments, has claimed that Ambati Rayudu was left out of India's 2019 ODI World Cup team as Kohli "didn't like him". Rayudu's omission from the team came at the last minute, with all-rounder Vijay Shankar replacing him in India's World Cup squad, leaving the entire Indian cricketing spectrum baffled.
Yograj Singh, the father of one of India's finest cricketers Yuvraj Singh, has often triggered controversies with his debate-stirring remarks. In a podcast, Yograj made some over-the-top comments while also showcasing his misogynistic mindset. Yograj, a former cricketer himself, said that the Hindi language sounds as if a 'woman is talking'. For Yograj, while it is fine for women to speak Hindi, men should prefer speaking languages like Punjabi which has a bolder aura to it.
"Dear cricket, give me one more chance," said Karun Nair in a post on X (formerly Twitter) in December 2022 after seeing his cricketing career nearing a heartbreaking end. However, the middle-order batter turned things around dramatically over the next 12-13 months and is reportedly back in the fray for national selection. Nair's case remains one of the most interesting in Indian cricket. He scored the famous 303 against England in Chennai, yet couldn't become a central figure in India's plans for the longest format. However, with an exemplary performance in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, Nair's astonishing numbers have forced the Ajit Agarkar-led national selection committee to stand up and take notice.
Jasprit Bumrah is the frontrunner to replace Rohit Sharma as India's Test captain going forward but the peerless pacer doesn't seem to be a long-term option given his nagging fitness concerns, the latest being a back spasm which has rendered him doubtful for next month's Champions Trophy. Indian selectors are hopeful that he still might have some role in the Champions Trophy since it's a swelling, but when one looks at the bigger picture the question arises whether he can be deemed a permanent skipper in Tests, now that Rohit's days in whites look as good as over. If Bumrah is fit and ready to lead the Test side in England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his four colleagues need to have a strong name as vice-captain so that in case of an unforeseen scenario, the deputy is good enough to take charge.
DHAKA : Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and wicketkeeper-batsman Litton Das have been left out of the squad for the Champions Trophy beginning next month.
