Former India all-rounder Syed Abid Ali, who was known for his versatility and sharp fielding skills, died on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. He was 83. He was part of an illustrious group of Hyderabad cricketers that included MAK Pataudi, ML Jaisimha, and Abbas Ali Baig. He died in the United States. The news of Abid Ali's passing was shared by the North America Cricket League (NACL). "It is with profound reverence and a heart full of admiration that I share with you the passing of uncle Syed Abid Ali a cricketing legend from India who made Tracy, California, his home, and whose remarkable legacy continues to inspire us to strive for excellence," NACL posted in its Facebook page.

India made a clean sweep in the men's discus throw F11 event on the opening day of World Para Grand Prix Athletes as Sagar clinched the gold medal with a throw of 34.84 metres here on Tuesday. He was followed by Balaji Rajendran, who secured silver by hurling the discus at 26.98 metres, and Janak Singh Harsana bagged bronze with 25.13. In the women's 100 metres across T35, T36, T38, and T44 classifications, Australia's Rhiannon Clarke emerged victorious, clocking 13.14 seconds. India's Preeti Pal impressed with a silver in 14.85 seconds, while Germany's Nicole secured bronze in 15.35 seconds. Brazil's Joeferson Marinho de Oliveira dominated the men's 100 metres T11 and T12 category with a stellar timing of 11.17 seconds.

India's Lakshya Sen fought his way back to reach the second round of the All England Championships on Tuesday, while compatriot HS Prannoy was eliminated in the opening round of the men's singles competition here. Lakshya, ranked 15th in the world, came from behind to defeat Chinese Taipei's world No. 37, SU Li Yang, with a 13-21, 21-17, 21-15 win in the opening round of the Super 1000 event. The 23-year-old from Almora will face Indonesia's third seed Jonatan Christie next. Lakshya had defeated Christie en route to his fourth place finish at the Paris Olympics last year.

BFI Excludes Anurag Thakur's Name From Electoral College For Elections

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) on Wednesday rejected Anurag Thakur's nomination for inclusion in the electoral college finalised for the March 28 elections, saying the former Sports Minister was "ineligible" to represent Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh Boxing Association (HPBA) had sent Thakur and President Rajesh Bhandari's names. The BFI issued a 60-member electoral college that was finalised after scrutiny. Thakur, a BJP Lok Sabha MP, was expected to contest for BFI president's post. "Mr. Anurag Singh Thakur (Himachal Pradesh Boxing Association) - The State Unit had sent the name, however, he is found ineligible for violation of Boxing Federation of India notice dated 07.03.2025 and National Sports Development Code of India, 2011," BFI said, explaining the decision.

The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on Tuesday lifted the suspension on the Wrestling Federation of India, restoring its recognition as a National Sports Federation (NSF) for the sport. The Sports Ministry had suspended the WFI body after the newly elected WFI president, Sanjay Singh, announced the hosting of the U-15 and U-20 nationals at Nandini Nagar in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh in December 2023.
