The Day 1 of the ongoing first Test between India and West Indies ended in the favour of the visitors. Opting to bat first, West Indies kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, courtesy of the five-wicket haul by ace all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin. India scored 80 runs without losing any wicket at stumps after West Indies were bundled out for just 150. However, the match will be fondly remembered for the heroics of the debutant batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who started his international career with a stunning boundary.

India veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was left out of the playing XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) final last month, which the Rohit Sharma-side lost to Australia. Considering the overcast conditions at The Oval last month, India made the tough call of leaving out Ashwin from the playing eleven for an extra pacer. The decision was widely debated before India came up short in their second successive WTC final. After bagging his 33rd five-wicket haul on Day 1 of the first Test against West Indies, Ashwin said it was tough not to play in the final.

Ahead of the first Test against West Indies in Dominica, India captain Rohit Sharma had confirmed that young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal will be making his debut for the team. Rohit had revealed that Yashasvi will open the innings alongside him, with Shubman Gill coming in at No.3. The Indian skipper had suggested that Gill has expressed his wish to play one down. Former India opening batter Aakash Chopra, however, believes it is unusual for a player to request for a change in the batting order in Indian cricket.

He has not been selected for the two-match Test series against West Indies. Umran had a below-par season in the IPL this year but Manjrekar feels that Umran can "be an X-factor" in the longest format of the game due to his pace.

Another masterful performance from off-spinner Ravi Ashwin saw him pick up five wickets and put India in control after Day 1 of the first Test against the West Indies in Dominica on Wednesday. Ashwin, surprisingly left out of the World Test Championship that India lost to Australia, took 5-60 including the key wickets of captain Kraigg Brathwaite (20) and top scorer Alick Athanaze (47).
