Indian Hockey Teams Aim For Paris Olympics Berth Via Hangzhou Asian Games

Indian men's and women's hockey teams are keen to win the gold medal at the upcoming Asian Games to secure direct qualification for the next year's Paris Olympics. The men's team, who ended a 41-year wait for an Olympic medal winning a bronze at Tokyo Games, will compete in the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai from August 3 in the build-up to the Hangzhou showpiece in September-October. "We have important matches coming up as we inch closer to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. We are excited about our upcoming tour as it also gives us a great opportunity to play against quality teams," Indian men's team skipper Harmanpreet Singh told Hockey India.

Indian Football Team Gets Exemption From Ministry, Will Participate In Asian Games

The Indian men's football team has got an exemption from the Sports Ministry and will be participating in the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, starting September 23. The national football team, which didn't get permission to participate during the Jakarta Games in 2018, is currently ranked 18th in Asia and the sports ministry's rule states that in team sport, only those in top-eight will get the nod. However, an exemption has been made and sports minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday tweeted that both the men's and women's national football teams will be taking part in the continental showpiece event.

Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his ascent in the ICC Test rankings, rising 11 places to 63rd while his skipper Rohit Sharma inched up to ninth among batters in the latest list released on Wednesday. Scores of 57 and 38 in the drawn second Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain have catapulted 21-year-old Jaiswal in the batters list as he now has 466 points. Rohit, who had scores of 80 and 57 in second Test, continued to remain the highest-ranked Indian Test batter. He has 759 point and is tied on the ninth place with his Sri Lankan counter part Dimuth Karunaratne.
