England's Alex Hales Retires From International Cricket With Immediate Effect

Explosive and temperamental England opening batter Alex Hales on Friday announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. Hales, who made his international debut against India in August 2011 in a T20I at Manchester, represented England in 11 Tests, 70 One-Day Internationals and 75 T20Is. Incidentally, Hales' last impact innings on the international stage was also against India, a brutal, unbeaten 47-ball 86 (4x4s, 7x6s) in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Hales and Jos Buttler (80 not out) had powered England to a 10-wicket win while chasing 169 at Adelaide. “Just a note to announce that I have decided to retire from international cricket,” Hales shared in a note on his Instagram account.

Asian Games bound Wushu player Owais Sarwar Ahenger and a minor swimmer have been handed provisional suspensions by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after the two athletes failed their dope tests. According to NADA, the 23-year-old Sarwar's dope sample contained a cocktail of drugs, including 19-norandrosterone, which is a metabolite of anabolic androgenic steroid nandrolone. The other banned drugs were stimulant mephentermine and its metabolite Phentermine.

The 17-year-old teenage prodigy D. Gukesh ended Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand's 37-year reign as India's top chess player in the live world rankings on Thursday. Gukesh, who defeated Mistradin Iskandarov in the second round of the FIDE World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, got a live rating of 2755.9 to move up to world number 9 in the classic open category. Anand, who has a score of 2754.0 dropped to tenth place. Anand has only dropped to second place in the live world rankings twice since 1986.

India and West Indies have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate in the first T20 International of the five-match series at Tarouba, Trinidad. While India were fined five per cent of their match fee for falling one over short of the minimum over-rate on Thursday night, West Indies have been docked 10 per cent of their match fee for falling two overs short of the minimum over-rate. Richie Richardson of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Hardik Pandya and Rovman Powell's sides were ruled to be one and two overs short respectively of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

World Archery Championships: Indian Women's Compound Team Wins Gold

The Indian women's compound team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur and Aditi Gopichand Swami bagged the gold medal at the World Archery Championships 2023 in Berlin on Friday. It was India's first-ever gold at the archery world championships in any category.
