Ramkumar Ramanathan, India's second-highest-ranked player, was on Saturday granted a wild card entry into the singles main draw of the Bengaluru Open, starting February 12. Ramkumar, who led India in the recent Davis Cup clash against Pakistan, had lost in the first round of the ongoing Chennai ATP Challenger and the opportunity will give him a chance to do well on home soil. Ramkumar has reached the singles final on the ATP Challenger circuit seven times, winning his lone title in Manama, Bahrain, in November 2021.
New season, same optimism. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will look to go all the way this time around when the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off. The tournament is expected to begin in the final week of March, following the conclusion of the Women's Premier League (WPL). Over the past two seasons, only a handful to teams have failed to win the IPL title, with RCB being one of them. RCB have played three finals under different captains (Anil Kumble in 2009, Daniel Vettori in 2011 and Virat Kohli in 2016) but an IPL title has eluded the franchise.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named the squad for the remaining three Tests of the five-match series against England on Saturday. After the team announcement, India's out-of-favour pacer Umesh Yadav put a cryptic post on his Instagram story and fans wasted no time in relating it to the bowler being overlooked for England Tests. In the changes in the fast bowling line-up, India roped in Akash Deep, giving a maiden Test call-up to the pacer. Meanwhile, Umesh stayed out of consideration. He last played for India in June 2023, which happened to be a Test match vs Australia at The Oval.
India's white-ball dynamo Suryakumar Yadav on Friday met with former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the latter's trip to India. Solskjaer and Suryakumar both attended a function in Bengaluru. The two spent a short amount of time together and expressed mutual appreciation. The Indian hitter has been out of the Indian team as he was healing from an ankle ailment sustained during the South Africa series. Earlier, arriving for his highly-anticipated tour in India, Manchester United legend Solskjaer expressed his excitement about visiting the country and engaging with passionate football fans during his three-day visit.
New Zealand pacer Lea Tahuhu was on Saturday named as replacement for Australia's left-arm quick Lauren Cheatle by Gujarat Giants ahead of the Women's Premier League (WPL) starting on February 23. The 33-year-old Tahuhu was bought by Gujarat for Rs 30 lakhs. "Gujarat Giants (GG) named Lea Tahuhu as replacement for Lauren Cheatle for the upcoming edition of the TATA Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024, starting February 23, 2024," WPL said in a statement.
Rookie pacer Akash Deep hogged the limelight when India announced their squad for the last three Test matches against England. Ahead of the five-game series, the BCCI announced the squad only for the first two Tests. After the end of the second game, the board named the players for the remaining matches and Akash Deep is the new name added to the list of players. It is a maiden Test call-up for the right-arm pacer, who also bats right-handed. Bowling all-rounder Akash, who hails from Bihar but plays domestic cricket for Bengal, replaced another pacer Avesh Khan in the India squad.
Virat Kohli's name is missing from the squad list for the last three Tests against England, which was announced on Saturday. "Virat Kohli will remain unavailable for selection for the remainder of the series due to personal reasons. The Board fully respects and supports Mr. Kohli's decision," the BCCI said in a release. There has been intense speculation about the nature of Virat Kohli's 'personal reason.' In the midst of this Virat Kohli's long-time teammate at Royal Challengers Bangalore, AB de Villiers last week said that the India star and Anushka Sharma's "second child is on the way".
