Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has opened up on his decision to replace Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian men's cricket team. Rohit replaced Virat as the full-time captain of India after the latter stepped down from his role in Tests and T20Is in 2022. Back then, Ganguly was the BCCI chief and there were reports of a possible rift between him and Kohli. Ganguly had earlier revealed that the BCCI had asked Kohli to reconsider his decision to step down as T20I captain.
Young India wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel has played just two Tests, but he has been already compared to the legendary MS Dhoni by several former cricketers. India and Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur on Sunday said that the BCCI will have to relook next year's Ranji Trophy schedule as playing 10 matches with just three-day gaps between games could lead to injuries to players. Thakur said it's difficult for players to adjust to the three-day gap between knockout matches, which was not the case earlier. "B"It's difficult because we are playing first-class games in (a) three days' gap - that has never happened in Ranji Trophy season ever," Thakur told the media here after making a fine century in the semifinal against Tamil Nadu.
India's campaign at the first World Olympic Boxing Qualifier was off to a disappointing start as World Championships bronze medallist Deepak Bhoria (51kg) went down fighting to Azerbaijan's Huseynov Nijat on the opening day in Busto Arsizio on Sunday. Bhoria, who pipped 2019 World Championships silver medallist Amit Panghal to make the Indian squad, lost via 2-3 split verdict. The first two rounds saw a tight contest as both the boxers went into attacking mode from the word go. The young pugilist from Azerbaijan took full advantage of his pace and swift movements to make life difficult for Bhoria in the ring. Bhoria lost both the first and second rounds with an identical 2-3 scoreline.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Sunday terminated the services of its principal legal advisor Nilanjan Bhattacharjee after he made serious "corruption allegations" against president Kalyan Chaubey, who had termed them "baseless". In a letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, Bhattacharjee said Chaubey worked out "corruption avenues" through non-transparent tender process and preferential allotment of tender. Chaubey had said that he would "reply legally".
The future remains uncertain for Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, who were axed from the BCCI contract list that was released recently. "Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations," a statement from BCCI said. Though there was no further explanation of their absence, despite the duo being in the scheme of things with the Indian cricket team for the last one year, one line in the BCCI press release gave enough hint about the cause of their contract termination. "The BCCI has recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team," the BCCI press release .
