After the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed Vinesh Phogat's appeal for the silver medal in the women's 50kg event at the Paris Olympics, the Indian wrestler's uncle Mahavir Phogat said that we will welcome her like a Gold Medalist when she returns to India on August 17. On Wednesday, CAS released a statement to confirm that, "The application field by Vinesh Phogat on August 7 has been dismissed." Speaking to ANI, Mahavir said that there's no scope of anything after the verdict of the CAS came out. He added that everyone will treat Vinesh like a gold medalist when she returns to India on August 17.

India have appointed Morne Morkel as their new bowling coach with the former South Africa international paceman officially joining head coach Gautam Gambhir's staff next month, local media reported.

Ousted Bangladeshi lawmaker and cricketer Shakib Al Hasan was given permission on Wednesday to remain with the national side in Pakistan by the de facto leaders who toppled his old boss. Shakib, a former Bangladesh captain, took office in January as a lawmaker for ousted ex-premier Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party after elections staged without any genuine opposition. He lost that job last week when parliament was dissolved after Hasina abruptly resigned and fled to India by helicopter in a dramatic conclusion to a student-led national uprising. One of those student leaders, 26-year-old Asif Mahmud, is now the de facto sports minister in an interim government and granted Shakib permission to remain with the team despite his ties to Hasina and the Awami League.

Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh said going forward no senior team player will be given the number 16 jersey although it will remain in circulation at the junior level. While lauding the veteran's contribution to the game, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said Sreejesh has earned the right to be considered the "God of Modern Indian Hockey".
