Women's World Cup Republic of Ireland v Nigeria, kick-off 11am Irish time
ADELAIDE: Wang Shuang kept China's Women's World Cup campaign alive by converting a penalty in Friday's (Jul 28) 1-0 win over Haiti at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, with the Asian side showing great resolve to claim victory despite Zhang Rui's red card.
SYDNEY : Keira Walsh has been ruled out of England's final Women's World Cup group stage game after picking up a knee injury during a 1-0 win over Denmark, but the midfielder could still return for the European champions' knockout fixtures.
Substitute Wang Shuang scored a 74th-minute penalty as China survived for more than an hour with 10 players to beat debutants Haiti 1-0 Friday and keep their Women's World Cup dreams alive. Needing to avoid defeat in Adelaide, China were the dominant team in damp conditions until Zhang Rui was sent off in the 29th minute for a clumsy tackle on Sherly Jeudy. The Asian champions weathered an onslaught early in the second-half from Haiti before Zhang Linyan was brought down in the box by Ruthny Mathurin against the run of play. After a lengthy VAR review, Wang made no mistake with her penalty kick and China gamely held on in a wild contest involving several calls for penalties. Haiti were awarded a penalty in second-half stoppage time after Roseline Eloissaint had been seemingly grappled with by Chen Qiaozhu, but the referee rescinded it after a VAR check.
ADELAIDE : China coach Shui Qingxia brought her Asian Cup-winning team to Australia hoping to move a step closer to restoring the Steel Roses to their former glories, more than two decades after losing to the United States in the Women's World Cup final.
England eked out a nervy 1-0 win over Denmark to keep their FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign on track but lost star player Keira Walsh to injury.
