The Indian women's team is clubbed in Pool A alongside hosts England, Canada, Wales and Ghana, while Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Scotland and Kenya complete Pool B. Just like their male counterparts, the Indian women returned empty-handed from the last edition of the Games in Gold Coast, finishing fourth after being routed 0-6 by England in the bronze medal play-off match. Going into the Games, the Indian women must have been haunted by their below-par effort in the recently concluded World Cup in Spain and the Netherlands, where the Savita Punia-led side finished a disappointing ninth. And the Janneke Schopman-coached side would be desperate to prove that it is a far better side than what the recent results indicate. They would be itching to prove their detractors wrong about the perception that a historic fourth place finish in last year's Tokyo Olympics was a mere fluke.

With a full squad and an eye on bettering their performance in the competition, Manpreet Singh and Co landed in Birmingham earlier this week. Having lost to England 1-2 in the bronze medal playoff and returned empty-handed in 2018, India are keen to make amends.

Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is the ultimate goal but Indian men's hockey team captain Manpreet Singh said the players will take one game at a time and their immediate focus will be on the group stage matches. Six-time champions Australia are the hot favourites in Birmingham and the Indians will have to beat them at some stage if they are to clinch gold. But, Manpreet said his players are not breaking sweat as yet thinking over their possible clash with the Kookaburras. "Right now, we are focusing on the group stage matches and not thinking about Australia at all. Everyone is of the opinion that we give our best in these matches and then think about what Australia has to offer when we face them," Manpreet said at a virtual press conference ahead of the Games.
