Euro 2024 is upon us, but it might not be the fiercest football competition as far as stakes, drama and intensity go this summer. Away from the pitches of Germany, where 24 national teams will battle to become European champions, the clash between the tournament's sticker albums is raging.
England lost to Iceland. France drew with Canada. Germany drew with Ukraine and lost to Greece. Portugal lost to Croatia. Italy did the bare minimum against Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Euro 2024 starts on Friday, and a lot of the tournament's betting favorites didn't leave amazing last impressions on the way to Germany.
MUNICH, Germany :Germany fans answered coach Julian Nagelsmann's call to "please be loud" on Friday, descending on Munich's medieval Marienplatz in their thousands to party with Scotland supporters and heading to a giant fan zone hours before the opening match of Euro 2024.
BERLIN :Central defender Mats Hummels will leave Borussia Dortmund immediately, the Bundesliga club said on Friday, ending a partnership that stretched back to 2008 with a three-year spell at Bayern Munich.
Sumit Nagal continued his splendid form by entering the semi-final of the ongoing Perugia Challenger on Friday. The sixth-seeded Indian overcame the challenge from the unseeded Maks Kasnikowski of Poland in the quarterfinal, winning in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. This is his eighth successive win since the start of Heilbronn Challenger in Germany. In the semi-final on Saturday, he will be taking on the winner of the other quarterfinal clash between the unseeded Bernabé Zapata Miralles of Spain and second seed Laslo Djere of Serbia. Earlier in the event, Nagal had been victorious against the unseeded Nerman Fatic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the opening round before being successful against the unseeded Alessandro Giannessi of Italy in the pre-quarterfinal.
Veteran France striker Olivier Giroud knows he is no longer a first choice for his country going into Euro 2024 and says he is ready to be a father figure for the emerging generation as Les Bleus aim to win the continental title for the first time in almost quarter of a century.
