BERLIN: Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany wants nothing more than a good night’s sleep after his team won the Bundesliga title last week with two matches left to play. The Belgian, in his first season at the club, said the constant preoccupation with the next match during the season did not really allow him to really enjoy the simple pleasures. “Sleep, really sleep,” Kompany said in a club interview when asked what he was most looking forward to after the title win. “You constantly have the pressure of the next game. You achieve something but then you have to start building for the next achievement.” It was by no means an easy domestic season for Bayern and Kompany, with the club facing stiff competition from last year’s champions Bayer Leverkusen, who also eliminated the Bavarians in the German Cup. Bayern were also eliminated by Italy’s Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals. “Sometimes you have these moments with the family during the year, but then your head is somewhere else,” Kompany said. “Now in the next few weeks I will leave some of that behind.
Inter Milan come back down to earth on Sunday when they travel to Torino, hoping to relaunch their Serie A title defence, still buzzing from one of the greatest nights of European football in their history. No-one was thinking about the three-point gap separating Inter from league leaders Napoli on Tuesday night when Inter showed extraordinary guts and determination to get past Barcelona, Lamine Yamal and all, and into the Champions League final. Inter's run to the final in Munich has come at the expense of their title defence, whether coach Simone Inzaghi wishes to say it or not, as the coach has had to fight on three fronts with resources dwarfed by those of his continental contemporaries.
Maybe wing-backs are making a comeback. Ruben Amorim's three-man defence is yet to catch the imagination at Manchester United, but elsewhere, there is evidence that the system is capable of delivering teams that challenge at the very top.
BARCELONA :Barcelona's dreams of a Champions League, Copa del Rey and LaLiga treble have vanished after Inter Milan roared back from the brink of elimination to grab a phenomenal 7-6 aggregate win and end the Spaniards' European campaign in the semi-final.
BERLIN : Bayer Leverkusen's attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz and coach Xabi Alonso lead a growing list of potential big-name exits at the end of the season.
MILAN :Barcelona manager Hansi Flick was upset over several refereeing decisions in his side's 4-3 loss at Inter Milan that stopped the Catalans reaching their first Champions League final in a decade after an extra-time goal by home substitute Davide Frattesi.
BERLIN: Bayern Munich keeper Jonas Urbig celebrated his first Bundesliga title on Sunday with his team sitting eight points clear at the top with two games left to play. But the 21-year-old, who is first choice at Bayern with Manuel Neuer injured, could end up collecting a second title with second-tier club Cologne.
