LONDON: Arsenal have signed Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes on a four-year contract with a further one-year option, the Premier League champions announced on Saturday. The North London club have agreed a deal reported by British media to be worth around 75 million pounds ($101.16 million) for the Brazil international, adding one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders to Mikel Arteta’s squad. “Since the first time I spoke to (Arsenal Sporting Director Andrea) Berta and Mikel, I was excited. I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge in my life,” Guimaraes said in a statement on the club’s website. “I am so excited to start. We have tough games to play this season, so the squad is going to be very, very important and I’m hopeful we can achieve our dreams.” The midfielder joined Newcastle from Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the league’s standout performers, playing a central role in the north-east club’s rise over the past three seasons. He played for Brazil at this year’s World Cup and has been a regular presence in the national team in recent years. The move comes as another blow for Newcastle following the departures of key players Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, as well as manager Eddie Howe, who stepped down from the role and was replaced by German coach Matthias Jaissle.
Captain Kevin Lokko starred with an unlikely hat-trick as Folkestone Invicta beat fellow newly-promoted club Walton & Hersham to enjoy a near-perfect start to an inaugural National League South season on Saturday.

The Galaxy announced the deal Saturday with the 34-year-old Roberto, who spent the past two seasons at Serie A’s Como following the conclusion of his 18-year career at Barcelona in 2024. His Galaxy contract contains an option for the 2028-29 season. “Sergi brings a combination of leadership, technical quality, tactical intelligence and championship experience that few players have,” Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said in a statement.

HONG KONG: A wondergoal from Luis Diaz powered a youthful Bayern Munich to a 2-1 win over Aston Villa in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong on Friday. Diaz starred in Colombia’s run to the World Cup last-16 and the winger lit up a sometimes scrappy game between last season’s German double-winners and the Europa League champions. Bayern hit the front in the 37th minute when South Korean defender Kim Min-jae ghosted in to glance a free-kick into the far corner from the edge of the six-yard box. The Bavarian club brought some of their big guns off the bench in the second half and started turning the screw, Diaz having a shot cleared off the line. He stretched the lead in trademark style in the 73rd minute, picking up the ball on the left, jinking inside and cracking a dipping shot in off the crossbar. It was a superb strike that delighted the majority of the 38,000 fans inside Kai Tak stadium who were mostly cheering for Bayern. Villa pulled one back in the 83rd minute when new signing Joao Gomes took aim from the edge of the area and left Manuel Neuer with no chance. They nearly equalized moments later but the legendary German stopper reacted quickly to block Tammy Abraham’s point-blank header, and Bayern closed out the game. Several World Cup stars, including Bayern’s Michael Olise and Harry Kane, did not travel to Hong Kong. “I told the players honestly that I was impressed (with the performance) because you know who’s there and you know who’s not there,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said. “It’s difficult to go into these games... and still look the same, still look (like) the Bayern Munich that we can be. “The last 10 or 15 minutes were a little bit a reflection of what pre-season is — a lot of changes...
LONDON: Bournemouth defender Julian Araujo has had surgery on a left thigh injury sustained during the club’s pre-season tour of Austria, the Premier League side said on Thursday. The Mexico international was forced off in Bournemouth’s opening friendly against German side St. Pauli and will miss the start of the new season. “He will be supported by the club’s medical department as he navigates a period of rehabilitation,” Bournemouth said in a statement. The 24-year-old has endured a frustrating run with injuries after suffering a quadriceps problem on loan at Celtic in March.
