The penultimate stage of the 2022 Tour de France is a 40.7 kilometre time trial from Lacapelle-Marival to Rocamadour. With one day to go until the riders cruise down the Champs-Élysées, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) is primed to hold on to the yellow jersey.
Jumbo-Visma’s brilliant Tour de France continued unabated on Friday on Stage 19 when Christophe Laporte made an optimistic surge to victory on the ramped finale in Cahors. Former Crystal Palace frontman Gayle, who was Newcastle’s top-scorer as they won the Championship under Rafa Benitez five years ago, has signed a two-year deal with Stoke City. The 32-year-old player, who was a peripheral figure under Howe and Steve Bruce before him, leaves on a free transfer.
LONDON: Oleksandr Zinchenko became the second player to leave Manchester City to join Arsenal in this offseason after signing for a reported fee of 30 million pounds ($36 million) on Friday. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who was assistant coach at City from 2016-19, has already signed Gabriel Jesus from his former club.
Christophe Laporte has come a long way since being Nacer Bouhanni’s deputy at Cofidis. If the Frenchman saw off that particular battle at his former team, the closest he ever came to winning a stage on the Tour was finishing in the wheels of compatriot Arnaud Demare at Pau in Stage 18 in 2018.
