Highlights of the seventh day at the Wimbledon tennis championships on Sunday (times GMT):
LONDON: Iga Swiatek's Wimbledon dream was hanging by the thinnest of threads as she faced two match points against Belinda Bencic but the world number one came through the toughest of tests to reach her first quarter-final at the grasscourt Grand Slam on Sunday (Jul 9).
WIMBLEDON, England: Twice, Iga Swiatek was a single point from exiting Wimbledon on Sunday, a single point from the sort of confounding defeat at the place that gives her so much more trouble than any of the other Grand Slam tournaments.
LONDON : World number one Iga Swiatek lived to fight another day after clawing her way back from a set down and saving two match points before beating Olympic champion Belinda Bencic 6-7(4) 7-6(2) 6-3 on Sunday to reach her first Wimbledon quarter-final.
Jumbo-Visma and UAE Team Emirates could be tempted to switch up their tactics at the 2023 Tour de France after both teams saw attacks backfire in the opening week, according to Robbie McEwen and Adam Blythe on The Breakaway. UAE were slammed for «weak team directing» after Tadej Pogacar unravelled on Stage 5 following a flurry of attacks for bonus seconds, while Jumbo have inadvertently set up the Slovenian, rather than their man Jonas Vingegaard, to gain time on two stages.
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek survived an almighty scare to beat Belinda Bencic 6-7 7-6(2) 6-3 in a thriller and advance to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. One set down and forced to defend two match points, Swiatek displayed the characteristics of a true champion to emerge victorious and seal her place in the last-eight, representing the Polish star’s best ever performance at SW19.
Frances Tiafoe has described his straight-sets defeat to Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round of Wimbledon as «horrible” and „depressing“. The 10th seed was beaten 6-2 6-3 6-2 in a match that was delayed because of rain after the first two sets took place on Saturday. Ad Dimitrov wrapped up the comfortable victory on Sunday in a match totalling 99 minutes having failed to face a single break point.
ORCINES, France: Four days ago Tadej Pogacar looked glued to the road as defending great rival Jonas Vingegaard dropped him in the Pyrenees but it has been a completely different affair since as the Slovenian almost closed the gap with the Tour de France overall leader on Sunday (Jul 9).
