The team, which had made history in 1978 by becoming the first African nation to win a World Cup match, had hoped for a better tournament this summer. But with nine goals conceded in two games and French head coach Sabri Lamouchi sacked after the first — a 5-1 defeat to Sweden — many Tunisians were faced with a different reality. Beyond player performances, they blame a deeply flawed national sporting system. “The collapse of the national team against Sweden and Japan has lifted the veil on the ‘football mafia’ whose dismantling everyone is demanding today, before starting from scratch and rebuilding our football,” the Arabic-language daily AlChourouk wrote. The French-language newspaper Le Temps argued that Tunisian football “has for many years been undermined by clientelism and inter-club infighting.” That has led to undeserving players being selected for the national team, the newspaper added. Investigative outlet Inkyfada alleged that there was an “unofficial quota policy” that saw some local players called up only “to satisfy major clubs in the domestic league and ensure that each received their share of FIFA compensation.” The Tunisian football federation did not respond to AFP’s requests for comment. Things could get even worse for Tunisia’s chastened players, whose last match on Thursday night is against Group F leaders the Netherlands, before they return home. PARIS: Briton Oscar Onley, who finished fourth in the race last year, has been forced to pull out of next month’s Tour de France due to a shoulder injury, his team said on Thursday. Onley, who has had a season disrupted by injuries and illness, dislocated his shoulder in a crash during the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes earlier this month. He crashed over a safety barrier on a speedy descent and was saved from a fall down into a ravine when he was caught in the branches of a tree,. “Further medical investigations have confirmed a significant shoulder injury,” Netcompany Ineos said in a statement. “Unfortunately, this means Oscar will be unable to compete in this year’s Tour de France.” The 23-year-old managed to finish the sixth stage in Auvergne despite his crash, but rolled over the line almost half an hour after the stage winner. He pulled out of the race before the next stage. “I’m gutted not to be able to line up for the Tour de France this year,” said the Scot. “My focus is now on recovering and getting my shoulder in a good place, but I’m really motivated to try and make something out of this season.” He has been unable to finish in three of his five stage races this year. He finished fourth overall at the Tour of the Algarve in February but then had to pull out of Paris-Nice in March with illness.
PARIS: A 21-year-old French soccer player with a second-division club has died after drowning during the heat wave that has gripped France. Kenzo Kies, who played for the Guingamp reserve team, died after being pulled from the Rhone River this week. Both Guingamp and Saint-Etienne, where Kies spent seven years in the club’s academy system, paid him a tribute in statements late Wednesday. France recorded its hottest ever day for the second day running on Wednesday. The Meteo France weather agency said the national thermal indicator — an average of temperatures measured at 30 weather stations — hit a new record of 30 C (86 F), the latest in a series of never-before-registered highs.
