The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled that athletes will have to ensure that they remain below their weight limit and no exception can be provided under any circumstance, while giving reasons for its rejection of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification from the Paris Olympics final. An ad-hoc division of the CAS had on August 14 rejected her appeal against a gut-wrenching disqualification from the final for being 100gm overweight, a decision that evoked a sharp reaction from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The CAS on Monday published a detailed decision, furnishing reasons why Vinesh's appeal was rejected.
India's star wrestler Vinesh Phogat was on cusp of history in the women's freestyle 50kg category at Paris Olympics 2024, after two giant-killing victories in the Round of 16 and quarter-final. Vinesh beat two titans of 50kg wrestling: Japan's Yui Susaki and Ukraine's Oksana Livach. In the semi-final, she beat Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez. However, before her final bout, Vinesh Phogat, the 29-year-old was disqualified from the women's 50kg free-style final for being 100gm overweight at the time of weigh-in. Vinesh, who was making her third Olympic appearance here, announced her retirement from the sport a day after her disqualification, saying that she doesn't have the strength to continue.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against disqualification from the Paris Olympics after she failed to make weight for her women's 50kg freestyle final last week.
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's petition for joint silver medal in the Paris Olympics 2024 was dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Wednesday. Vinesh was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle wrestling gold medal match for being overweight. The wrestler filed an appeal in front of CAS for a joint-silver medal in the category but her request was denied. "The application filed by Vinesh Phogat on 7 August 2024 is dismissed," the CAS said in its initial order. 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medal-winning wrestler Bajrang Punia took to social media to react to CAS' verdict on Vinesh.
What might seem as an erroneous miscalculation by Vinesh Phogat herself or her team from the outside, was actually a Herculean effort on the inside. Having weighed in under the weight limit of 50kg before the start of her Paris Olympics 2024 matches, Vinesh ended the first day of competition on 52.7kg. By then, the headlines had gone berserk celebrating a historic first wrestling final for an Indian female at the Olympics. It was all about to come crashing down, as Vinesh was declared 100 grams overweight the next morning.
