The Indo-Dutch pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matwe Middelkoop will take on the Salvadoran-Dutch duo of Marcelo Arevalo and Juan-Julien Roger in the semi-finals of the French Open men's doubles event on Thursday. Bopanna and Middlekoop displayed grit and determination to see off the second seeded Croatian pair of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic in the previous round. Arevalo and Roger, on the other hand, defeated the seventh seeded pair of Tim Putz and Michael Venus in the previous round.
Novak Djokovic deserves more respect
Marin Cilic said it was a "great achievement" as he joined Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray in becoming only the fifth active player to make the semi-finals at all four Slams. Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, fired 33 aces past seventh-seeded Andrey Rublev to reach his first French Open semi-final on Wednesday with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (10/2) win. He also crashed 88 winners in the four-hour 10-minute tie and will play either eighth-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway or Danish teenager Holger Rune for a place in Sunday's final. "Absolutely fantastic achievement for me. To be mentioned among them," said 33-year-old Cilic. "I'm feeling great on the court, enjoying myself, being me, playing my own game. It's paying off, and I am enjoying the run." Rublev, playing in his fifth quarter-final at the majors, grabbed the first set but wilted under a Cilic barrage over the next two.
Stimac has a roadmap for the future and the forthcoming Asian Cup qualifying tournament is a step in that direction. As of now, Stimac's focus is on fitness and despite players having niggle issues he is confident that he has a side to do the job. The Croatian is quite happy with the preparatory camp in Bellary, before coming to Kolkata. "It's really nice to be in this football city," he said. In fact, he is looking forward to the home crowd putting its weight behind India. Grouped with Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Cambodia, India would be optimistic about their chances. Stimac had to rework his plans somewhat after losing Ritwik Das. Defender Deepak Tangri may not be a like-for-like replacement, but it still fits Stimac's scheme of things.
