INDIAN WELLS, United States: Novak Djokovic was entered into the draw for this week’s ATP/WTA Indian Wells tournament on Tuesday but it is unclear whether he will take part in the tournament, organizers said. A brief statement from tournament organizers said officials were in contact with Djokovic’s team to determine whether he would play in California or even be allowed to enter the United States because he has not been vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Stockport tennis star Liam Broady opened his campaign to qualify for Tennis's 'fifth' slam, the BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells, California, with a win over Indian Ramkumar Ramanathan to set up a match with Christopher O'Connell.
Ash Barty, who has decided to skip the Sunshine Double, has held the crown for a total of 118 weeks … one week more than Justine. And out of those 118 weeks, the Australian has captured that spot for 110 weeks in a row, a feat only Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert have surpassed. On the men’s side, Daniil Medvedev made his debut as world No.1 last week, putting an end to 18 years of domination from the 'Big Four' (Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray).
It’s time for Indian Wells. The unofficial ‘fifth Grand Slam’ of the tennis season is back in its March spot for the first time since 2019 after it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and then pushed back to October last year. Ad/> Cameron Norrie and Paula Badosa will be the defending champions in the desert while women’s world No.1 Ashleigh Barty is not playing and there is still no confirmation on the status of men’s world No.2 Novak Djokovic.
Rafael Nadal will be the man to beat when Indian Wells kicks off this week while Naomi Osaka will look to begin her ascent back to the top of the tennis world at the tournament that launched her career. Nadal's season was cut short last year due to a foot injury but the Spaniard has come roaring out of the gates in 2022, winning January's Australian Open for a men's record 21st Grand Slam title. He followed that up by winning his fourth title in Acapulco last month and has not lost in 15 matches this season. "Rafa Nadal is now 35-years-old and he's never had a start to the season like this one," Indian Wells tournament director and former player Tommy Haas said on a recent podcast. "He's the guy to beat here, there's no doubt about it. And he obviously enjoys it here very much," Haas said of Nadal, a three-time winner of the Masters 1000 tournament.
