Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has opined that the team management could give a chance to Mukesh Kumar in the second Test against South Africa, starting January 3 in Cape Town. He, however, added that it would be unfair with Prasidh Krishna if he is dropped. Manjrekar also pointed out that had there been the previous management that was during the Ravi Shastri-Virat Kohli era, it would have made changes in the playing XI, saying that the former coach-caption duo was "trigger-happy".
Fresh from scoring his maiden ODI century, India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was seen playing football during a local tournament in Kerala. Earlier this month, Samson scored his first hundred for India in the third and final ODI against South Africa at the Boland Park in Paarl, helping India win the series by a 2-1 margin. Current not part of the Indian team for the ongoing Test series against the Proteas, Samson is enjoying his time away from the sport by playing football at a local tournament in Kerala.
Dominic Thiem's Brisbane International qualifying match against Australian James McCabe was suspended for 40 minutes on Saturday after a poisonous snake slithered courtside. McCabe had just wrapped up the first set 6-2 against the Austrian 2020 US Open champion when the reptile -- reportedly an eastern brown snake -- was spotted among electrical wires on the side of the court in front of spectators. Play was halted until a snake catcher arrived and managed to tease it into a bag. Eastern browns are capable of delivering a potent bite and their venom can result in progressive paralysis and uncontrollable bleeding, according to the website of the Australian Museum.
Cricket South Africa on Saturday named a completely new-look Proteas side that will take on New Zealand in February's two-match Test series tour.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar analysed Shubman Gill's second innings dismissal during the first Test against South Africa. India suffered an embarrassing innings and 32-run defeat at the hands of the Proteas in the one-sided game in Centurion. In his first innings, an unlucky Gill fell for 2 off 12 balls after brushing a ball with his glove down the leg side on the bowling of Nandre Burger. Gill was looking solid at the crease in his second innings, having scored 26 runs at a strike rate of over 70, but a superb yorker from Marco Jansen sent him packing.
Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has blamed the "lack of skill" for India's crushing defeat to South Africa in the first Test earlier this week. South Africa beat India by an innings and 32 runs at the SportSport Park in Centurion, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. India scored just 245 runs in the first innings, while also allowing South Africa to post 408. After conceding a lead of 163 runs, India were bowled out for 131 in their second innings, thus crashing to an innings defeat.
South Africa have been dealt a big blow ahead of the New Year's Test against India, that starts in Cape Town on January 3. South Africa defeated the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team comprehensively in the first Test. Dean Elgar heroic ton and South African pacer's relentless attack ensured that India lose the match by an innings and 32 runs. However, their pace power will miss the services of Gerald Coetzee in the second Test. India need to win the match to draw the series.
