GUYOT environnement finally returned to Aarhus alongside the rest of the Ocean Race teams on Wednesday. The team were well received by a cheering crowd, with their song playing at the race village. Co-skipper Will Harris believes Team Malizia can thrive as underdogs heading into Leg 6 of The Ocean Race, which will have “absolutely everything”. After five legs of the race Team Malizia are third in the overall standings, four points behind leaders 11th Hour Racing. In a display of sailing prowess, Team Malizia has seemingly shattered the 24-hour monohull distance record at the Ocean Race, surpassing the previous mark set by Team Holcim-PRB earlier on Friday by the slimmest of margins. Initially positioned in third place, Team Malizia seized the opportunity presented by the record-breaking conditions and steadily ramped up their mileage.
French offshore sailor Charlie Dalin, a two-time IMOCA world champion, is set to join the 11th Hour Racing Team, the sole US entry in The Ocean Race, for a pivotal double-pointer leg from Newport, Rhode Island, to Aarhus, Denmark. Hailing from Le Havre and currently based in Brittany, France, Dalin has consistently achieved victories and podium finishes in major offshore sailing events in recent years.
The three leading teams are just 50 miles apart on the leaderboard at The Ocean Race 2023, with 11th Hour Racing Team at the head of the pack. Just behind them are Team Malizia and Biotherm, with GUYOT environnement — Team Europe a way back in fourth spot. Will Harris is counting down the days to when he takes charge of Team Malizia for Leg 4 of The Ocean Race. As part of a scheduled change, Harris will take on the role from Boris Herrmann when the race gets back under way in Itajai. Ad It has been five years in the making for Harris, who worked as shore support in the 2017/18 edition.
Team Malizia and The Ocean Race have confirmed that Rosalin Kuiper has suffered a concussion after falling from her bunk during Leg 3. In a statement released overnight early on Monday morning, it was revealed that on Sunday morning Kuiper was thrown from her bunk when the boat turned suddenly. Ad Whilst Kuiper didn’t lose consciousness, she was bleeding badly so the team contacted race doctor, Dr Spike Briggs.
Holcim-PRB skipper Kevin Escoffier has spoken about camaraderie between rival sailors and sportsmanship in The Ocean Race, revealing that they even help each other out despite being in direct competition. Escoffier’s team currently lead the third leg of this year’s race but the journey from Cape Town to Itajai in Brazil has not been without drama on the water.
