Hurling is coming home in Offaly.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson returned to the team to play his first match at the World Cup on Friday, winning the toss and opting to bowl first against Bangladesh.
After India's six-wicket win against Australia in the fifth match of the tournament at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, former Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting said that Pat Cummins' side looked off the mark. While speaking in an ICC video that was shared on Instagram, Ricky Ponting said that it is very important to win matches at the World Cup and finish top of the table. Ponting also added that Australia cannot afford such mistakes in the tournament.
Mitchell Santner said he is enjoying the prospect of bowling more aggressively at the World Cup in India than he does back home after the New Zealand spinner took five wickets in a 99-run win over the Netherlands.
Mitchell Santner achieved an almost impossible feat as he scored 13 runs off just one legal delivery during the Cricket World Cup 2023 match between New Zealand and Netherlands on Monday. The feat was incidentally achieved on the final ball of the New Zealand innings with Bas de Leede being the bowler who ended up conceding the runs. With just one ball left in the innings, De Leede ended up bowling a full toss which Santner smashed it over long-on for a six. The umpire quickly judged it no-ball and a free hit was awarded to New Zealand. Santner was on strike once again and the left-handed batter was able to repeat his feat as it was a low full-toss once again and this time, he heaved it over backward point for another six. With the two sixes and the no-ball, 13 runs were scored from just one legal delivery.
Mitchell Santner produced a five-wicket haul to complement a superlative batting display as New Zealand continued their impressive run in the World Cup with a massive 99-run win over the Netherlands on Monday. Santner (5/59) spun a web around Netherlands who were all out for 223 in 46.3 overs on a sluggish pitch after Will Young (70), Rachin Ravindra (51) and Tom Latham (53) posted fifties to power New Zealand to 322 for 7. The 31-year-old Santner, who had provided the final flourish with a 17-ball 36 not out to push New Zealand's total, dismissed Max ODowd (16), Colin Ackermann (69), Scott Edwards (30), Roelof van der Merwe (1) and Ryan Klein (8), while Matt Henry (3/40) took three.
New Zealand consolidated the top spot in the Cricket World Cup 2023 standings with another impressive victory over Netherlands on Monday. Mitchell Santner produced an all-round performance and Tom Latham played his part to perfection with a gritty half-century as New Zealand emerged victorious by 99 runs. As a result, the Kiwis became the first team to have 4 points and they also have an impressive NRR (Net Run Rate) of +1.958. South Africa are second with 2 points and an even better NRR of +2.040 while Pakistan and Bangladesh are third and fourth respectively. India remain fifth with a NRR of 0.883.
