Sergio Pérez, his teammate, came second on the day and third overall, while Charles Leclerc of Ferrari finished third in the race and second over the season. Esteban Ocon was fourth for Alpine with Lewis Hamilton in fifth for Mercedes.

Max Verstappen grabbed pole position at the Japanese Grand Prix by one hundredth of a second as Charles Leclerc had to settle for second. The Dutchman, who will clinch the title if he wins in Japan and claims the fastest lap bonus point regardless of results elsewhere, posted 1.29:304 early in Q3 – a time that was almost, but not quite, eclipsed by Leclerc’s last lap. George Russell led Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes one-two in a wet second practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix. The high-speed Suzuka circuit and the harder tyre compounds were expected to play into Mercedes’ hands, although the conditions are likely to not be representative for the predicted dry weather for qualifying on Saturday.
